Derin C @DerinCattelane Jan 8 This is one of the worst films I have ever had the misfortune of watching. Almost none of the characters were likeable or even vaguely sympathetic. I am impressed they managed to make everyone so hateable but make it unfunny when bad things happen to them. The ex wife tells her kid that her father died of cancer, the new husband (who is also a friend of the "protagonist") is a massive dickhead, and the former husband isn't that much better, also being a massive jerk. The entire movie is honestly just really depressing, and the ending is really bad. The former husband just watches as his daughter plays a piano he and the new husband stole together. He then just leaves without even trying to say hello to her. The music is all happy to try and trick you into thinking this is a good thing, but it just doesn't feel like that at all to me. It is also not even that funny, none of the "jokes" made me laugh and they all felt really mean spirited despite this being listed as a "comedy". Or maybe it's meant to be watched by Americans, elated by the prospect of recognizing references like Sidney Crosby and a loonie. What is up with those accents though. And why can't Theresa speak french properly? It feels more like someone just tried to smash Canadian onto American, and make that make sense. Paul Rudd's dead tooth is accurate, half a star just for that. It is also not a comedy like Deck the Halls or Bad Santa, as some have mentioned and as it seems to have been advertised. Its more like "Christmas a la John Sayles." With this misconception out of the way, people can enjoy it for what it is : a well done story with very good writing and acting. The gritty atmosphere (a shady corner in New York) and tone are stark contrast to what one expects from a Christmas movie, and it makes it hard to guess how the two will handle their misfortunes as they come. The soundtrack's jazz piano interpretations of carols was perfect and the ending a satisfying surprise. This is one to put on when you've exhausted your supply of required seasonal viewing and want something fresh.
