jesse v Sep 4 who is this for exactly? it's like an adult examined the current Gen z social media popularity trope and made a movie out of it. With weird old political references and lots of POV camera angles and the lack of ADULTS AND CLASSROOMS, this movie is just a stylized mutation of mean girls. It brings a keen knowledge and the sharp tongue of modern online life, yet also an old-school sensibility that's rare these days -- but will never go out of style. The person who wrote this film has pitch-perfect ear for dialogue. The acting, photography and overall production value are both sharp and endearing -- and the sly soundtrack made me smile multiple times throughout. More movies like this, please. Go stream it. See more c f Sep 2 Almost Popular feels like Clueless meets Mean Girls, with a sprinkle of Napoleon Dynamite’s quirky humor and Ruby Rose Turner’s Disney Channel charm. It leans into the classic high school nerds-vs-popular-kids vibe, predictable “glow-up” arc and all, but it lands well enough to be satisfying. The comedy leans hard on physical bits — some sharp, some sloppy. For example, the gag with the cell phone and the other girl’s eyes could’ve been pulled off smoother and been way funnier. Still, it had me entertained, and the movie never takes itself too seriously, which is part of the fun. There’s an oddly specific casting going on, which was a so-so kind of thing, a little obvious, and they kinda didn’t cast every role perfectly because of that. One character’s politics came through, but it stayed part of their personality rather than the movie’s agenda, which I appreciated. Performances across the board have charm, with Ruby Rose Turner especially carrying the Disney-channel-style wit. A couple of side characters leaned into raunchier or more exaggerated humor, which added laughs without taking over the story. Overall, it’s a predictable glow-up story, sure, but it works. It’s funny, lighthearted, and has just enough personality to stand out. The biggest shame is that hardly anyone even knows this movie is out. I only stumbled on it by chance, noticed tickets were available, then watched the trailer and thought, “Okay, that feels like Mean Girls.” At my AMC with 30 screens, it premiered in the smallest theater, and on opening weekend no less. With little promotion and bigger, older titles still dominating screens, this film isn’t really getting a fair shot.
