Thrilling? Really bad. See more Blu B Mar 20 On paper this is such a weird use of assets of different backgrounds....John Carpenter with Chevy Chase in a Sci-Fi Comedy? This could go any which way and the end result is just ok for better or for worse. Everything here is just alright including the direction. It doesn't feel like a Carpenter film at all really. This really isn't a horror movie at all. Hardly any deaths, no gore, no attempts to scare. Instead it's all used for comedy, romance, and a Sci-Fi plot. And what is here oddly enough probably could be good actually. The biggest problem this has is it's too slow at certain points because it has a major problem tying the romance elements together with the actual Invisibility plot/being pursued by agents. The two stories 80% of the time feel completely seperate. This means it has complete changes in tone from pursuing him in chases, to slow romance stuff, and also comedy that...I don't know...Kind of works? It's odd which is probably the only reason Chevy Chase was brought in. The comedy is sort ofclever and works at times but others it falls flat or can feel out of place. The dumb brown face scene to...is so out of left field. The comedy, romance, and serious Sci-Fi all clash and create a weird tone that is flat but also inconsistent. It's very odd. I will say this makes perfect sense and isn't convuluted. Sometimes the comedy can get close to feeling like stuff just happens for gags but it never really goes too badly into that suprisingly. There also is the weird Noir/Double Indemnity style of telling the story as it happens which again feels very odd and I don't think it adds anything. If anything it just adds to the tone problem this has. Is it serious? Funny? It ain't scary. The special effects are really good, the invisible building set is so freakin cool and such a creative idea too. Chevy Chase & Hannah are just ok too. It's not the disaster this could've been to Chase's credit. But it's nothing special and Neil's just alright as the villian too. He's a bit to over the top. And the soundtrack is just alright. It doesn't sound anything like a Carpenter score but it serves it's purpose. It can get to romance and other times just generic action. I guess also this a remake of the 35' Invisible Man to but it doesn't really feel like it. It feels like it's its own thing. It's still a huge jump above Hollow Man. But still skip this. There isn't much here for fans of Chase, Carpenter, Horror fans, or comedy/romance. Tim Treakle See more Don P @radiodon 03/24/2024 This is probably the best movie that you've avoided seeing. I've never understood why this movie has gotten such low numbers. This is, in essence, John Carpenter's remake of Hitchcock's North by Northwest. A lot of people ridiculed Chevy Chase's performance in this, but then again these are people who probably never have seen him in any of the Fletch movies. Remember, this was when Chevy Chase was Chevy Chase, not Disgruntled Chevy. He not only handles the humor as well as he's always had, but he is a surprisingly good serious actor. The chemistry between Chase and Daryl Hannah is beyond good. They make you root for them as people and as a couple. Carpenter hits all of his notes almost on the money, riffing on NBNW's several elements. Early in the movie, for instance, Chase hangs onto a ledge in the same manner that Eva Marie Saint held on to Mount Rushmore in thr Hitchcock movie. There's even set pieces on a train, akin to NBNW. They even found a way to get the Hitchcock movies main villain, James Mason. This was the first time I saw Sam Neill in anything, and this was before Jurassic Park. Neill is a dead ringer for Mason. Smooth, sophisticated, and elegant, he is definitely the best thing about this underrated movie. If your mind is open, don't let this rare treasure pass you by. I don't know about you, but for me, it's 100 minutes well spent. See more David W @Sternhammer 05/16/2023 A great cast and for its time the special effects are brilliant. Its at heart a romantic comedy with the usp twist that the protagonist is invisible. The script is a bit light on the comedy though and concentrates a bit too much on the romantic element which doesn't make the best use of the talented cast, director and special effects. For a John Carpenter movie the direction could have been a bit pacier and tighter, I'm not sure light comedy is where the director feels most at home but that's mainly down to the script. It's certainly not bad by any means though and still worth a watch, especially for Carpenter completists. See more Read all reviews
