An impassioned surfer, Taylor Lane, creates a functional surfboard with 10,000 littered cigarette butts collected from California beaches. The Cigarette Surfboard takes Taylor around the world to learn from professional surfers who are working to protect and restore the health of the ocean through science, education, art, business and political activism. Inspired by this global cast of characters (including Jack Johnson, Cliff Kapono, Easkey Britton and Mikey February), Taylor returns home to California and uses the Ciggy Boards to generate uproar on the environmental, human health, and economic impacts of cigarette butts. The Ciggy Boards become the symbol of a grassroots campaign to hold Big Tobacco accountable for their toxic, plastic waste. This immersive documentary provides viewers an up close experience of the ocean through surfers' eyes to amplify a message of urgency and possibility regarding the ocean's wellbeing. Surfing is the medium, but the message is universal.

Jane S @gratefuljane 2d I was captivated throughout the entire film and found it to be very inspirational and motivating in terms of what we can all do to help protect the ocean! I loved the innovative designs that they used to create a beautiful surfboard from … cigarette butts! How is that possible! I've been teaching marine conservation for over 40 years and this film shows a whole new way to get important conservation messaging out to a wide audience. Bravo!! Inspiring and a pleasure to watch See more Susana L @RT35387714 Aug 6 An impassioned surfer turned environmental warrior takes us on a journey from simple curiosity to political activism that achieves real change. Watching it unfold is inspiring; the lyrical surf cinematography and the stories of ecology-minded surfers around the world who fight to preserve the ocean, the blue pulse of our planet, make for an engaging and inspiring experience. It was eye-opening to learn how something as small as a cigarette butt can have such a large impact on marine ecosystems. The film was engaging and did a great job explaining the issue without feeling overwhelming. It made me think more about the importance of keeping our beaches clean and how small actions can make a difference. See more Abby A @AppropriateAdult Aug 4 The Cigarette Surfboard is an inspiring film about the difference that people can make in pursuing policy changes when something is wrong. It is also about responding to injustice with creativity and art, and how effective creativity can be in making people aware of that injustice. Making a surfboard out of cigarette butts was a brilliant way to use what my kids used to call "cigarette poop" when they found butts on the beach. As an activist myself, I learned a lot about advocacy and was reminded that people often respond more readily to being "shown" rather than being "told". I highly recommend this film for everyone who loves the ocean, and for everyone who loves justice.
