Evelyn X @yiyi1111 Jan 8 About halfway through the film, I realized I had confused Evita with Elisabeth—perhaps because of the narrator's role. It tells the story of a woman who always knew what she wanted. She seized every opportunity she had, rising from an illegitimate daughter to the wife of the President. It is a journey from the country to the city; from a social butterfly to a glamorous actress who captures fame with her power, beauty, and charm. I am not familiar with the actual history, but the film portrays her as someone who genuinely benefited the poor and earned their respect. The highlight, of course, is the most famous song: 'Don't Cry for Me, Argentina'. And she do look very good in the clothes. See more Thomas H. @Hitman777gb Dec 5 Madonna is perfect in this musical. See more Simon T @Bucksplit Jul 5 The biggest problem with Evita is that it has next to no plot. Poor girl sleeps her way to the top, then takes a long time dying. That's it. With music. Lloyd Webber has no off button, so he keeps repeating a handful of Big Tunes, sticks in a key change so he can milk it even more, then hands it to his orchestrator to generate a Latin-American vibe. He's lucky here to have Alan Parker inject some grit and genuine beauty, although even he can't rescue a moribund second half. W 02/21/2025 When I first saw this movie, as an opera lover, I quickly realized that I was in opera heaven! The melodies are infectious and the semitones dramatic and intriguing. Aside from Madonna's stellar all-digital 1989 record album, "Like A Prayer", I believe Evita is her crowning achievement. Despite Madonna's omnipresence, Antonio Banderas is the glue that holds it all together. You can watch Evita over and over, mainly for the music. See more Read all reviews
