What to Know

Critics Consensus

Zoe Kazan imbues her legacy adaptation with delicious moral quandaries and sumptuous landscapes, but it's the expanded character work from Pugh and Lee that brings justice and dignity to this new canon of East of Eden.

Audience Says

Despite a heavy premise, East of Eden's 20th century mise-en-scène and gripping pace make this Steinbeck adaptation an undeniably bingeable watch.

Glossy and unsubtle, yet full of surprises and suspense. It’s also a feat of translation that whittles the book down to its core components while expanding the elements that lend themselves most readily to prestige-television tropes. Go to Full Review

Cathy Ames is made all the more layered in the hands of Florence Pugh, one of her generation’s greatest acting talents. Go to Full Review

Zoe Kazan’s adaptation is judgmental about the American past and pessimistic about its future... An East of Eden without the hopefulness encapsulated by "timshel" is a bleak one. Go to Full Review

Sometimes, evil just "is." Still, Pugh is amazing. She has the skills of the greatest screen actors, conveying complex thoughts and emotions with minimal effort. A strong cast carries those downtimes when she’s offscreen. Go to Full Review

This seven-part serialisation from Netflix arrives trailing a glimmer of historic pedigree, since it’s been created and written by Kazan’s granddaughter Zoe, and you could imagine that her illustrious ancestor might be impressed with the results. Go to Full Review

A truly smart TV adaptation brings something new to the text, and Kazan’s show certainly achieves that. Go to Full Review

Lane P @RT07242269 12 hrs ago Very well done, enjoyed it, great acting could not stop watching it See more Michael D @MichaelX 1 day ago This series is fantastic. Everything works: the story, the characters, the set and setting, and Florence Pugh, who conveys so much with so few facial muscles that I felt it in my bones. Christopher Abbott is fantastic and Martha Plimpton excellent in a small but pivotal role. But it was Hoon Lee who blew me away, supplying the heart and soul that lets this family with intergenerational trauma survive. Watching racists hurl slurs at him, and forcing him to speak Pidgin though he was born in the U.S., is heartbreaking. The sets and costumes are magnificent, and showrunner Zoe Kazan and cinematographer Stuart Dryburgh compose images that left me catching my breath. My only nit: filmed in New Zealand, it felt slightly removed to this longtime Californian. This seven-episode meditation built around "timshel" ("Thou mayest") asks the viewer to ponder whether a person is born evil or chooses it by a combination of choices and circumstance. Days after finishing, I’m still thinking about it. See more Russell A @Rallen117 1 day ago Of course in 2026 they have to woke things up and make Cathy not responsible for the bad things she did because she was treated badly. In the book she was just pure evil but that can’t be the case in 2026. It made the story much much better not trying to justify why she’s evil. I mean it’s okay to say that one woman is just evil because she was born that way but instead they blame it on the men in her life. Also they try to make the white soldiers out to be the only evil ones by showing them slaughtering innocent Indian lives but leave out the fact that Indians were doing the same thing to innocent white families. See more Fig M @fig-mint 1 day ago So disappointed. This is one of my favorite novels. This adaptation has decided that sex sells and the actual story and plot are meaningless. All the characters are unidimensional. Cathy is not the centerpiece of the novel and everything that is funny and charming and witty in the novel is mysteriously absent. See more Walt S @RT36330541 1 day ago A wonderful series with good to excellent acting. The story hooked us as could not wait to see each of the following episodes. Watch and enjoy. See more Cathy M @RT688904322 2 days ago Florence Pugh is stellar in this, as are Hoon Lee and Ciarán Hinds. I wasn't so sold on some of the other characters, nor do I think they put the work in for some character development - especially Cal. Not having read the book, I can't draw any comparisons and don't have some context, I'm sure. It just felt like a very uneven show, with some highlights from a few characters and muddy development of others. See more Read all reviews
