After a seemingly fatal accident at summer camp claims young Jason Voorhees' life, his mother, Pamela, is left grief-stricken. As the town moves on, Pam clings to the hope that her son, whose body was never recovered, may still be alive. The town's chief of police, Levon Brooks, offers comfort and friendship and the two soon grow fond of each other, but Pam's intentions come into question as other dead bodies begin to turn up in the quiet town of Crystal Lake. Levon asks his sister, Briana, a journalist, to dig into these unusual deaths using her resources. What begins as a modest pursuit grows into something far beyond anyone's reckoning. Meanwhile, Pam's dark past comes back to haunt her, forcing her to fight for her very survival and eventually setting off a chain of events that slowly transforms her into the rampaging killer we know from "Friday the 13th."

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Linda Cardellini plays the perfect mom who can do no wrong in this slasher prequel that lives up to the best and worst of its franchise's ilk, but since mother knows best, Crystal Lake is a campy, gory, good time.

What passes for story amounts to little more than a two-dimensional cartoon rendered in human-flesh puppetry, courtesy of actors capable of much better, Cardellini included. Go to Full Review

Crystal Lake may be a little underpowered... but it is a stylish and enjoyable interlude nonetheless. Go to Full Review

Linda Cardellini kills it as Pamela Voorhees, and frequent call-backs push the nostalgia buttons as assuredly as Jason rips off campers’ faces. Shame about the ludicrous backstory. Go to Full Review

Linda Cardellini kills it here. One moment, she’s a quiet, protective mother trying to keep a low profile so she isn't discovered. And at another moment, she’s losing her mind in a bonkers performance. Go to Full Review

Cardellini treats the material with respect, bringing to the role her singular brand of controlled intensity, and Will Catlett puts in a great shift playing a cop carrying a torch for Pamela. Go to Full Review

Corey F @Cfedor 3 hrs ago Creative storytelling of this origin story of a cult classic character. Great period piece with interesting scenery and complimentary musical score. Highly recommended viewing with each episode delivering a compelling story. See more AJ L @aj9843 7 hrs ago Linda Cardellini was soooooooo damn good! Genuine awesome show. Each episode engaging and action-packed (for the most part) which is awesome for a story which's duty is building out a backstory for a character. Great spooky setting. Wish the flashback episode (episode 7 of 8) would've been earlier in the season though, was oddly placed right as the story is climaxing See more Tony W @Neverending80s 15 hrs ago A great drama with gory horror thrown in for good measure, that just so happens to completely rewrite and rearranges the mythology to make things in the films that come later make complete sense. The series also makes the films easier to follow. This series has a sexiness woven throughout it without being overt or gratuitous. If the show runner Brad Kane continues down this path, to correct the ills of the past films in future seasons leading up to the films that took place in the 80’s, I can see a complete revival of Friday the 13th coming. One of the few prequel series that’s better than what came before. A must watch. See more sxylilvirgo S @RT61336247 23 hrs ago Loved the story! It was definitely worth watching. I loved all the characters and hope there's a season 2. See more Ari R @ari6000 1 day ago I love Linda Cardellini but her backstory about Jason being a science experiment was silly, not interesting and not scary. And why does Jason kill campgoers after being teased by one kid? No tension whatsoever leading up to the boring kills. This is Pamela's story and it's not compelling. See more Matthew M @kittycatman6987 1 day ago It’s missing something for me that a lot of other people agree with. The gore and violence was enjoyable but not enough skin for Friday the 13th. There I said it. The actors and actresses did great though. The back story is also a little much. See more Read all reviews
