The story unfolds in the ancient Ukrainian forest during the mystical Mermaid Week -- the once in 4 years time when mythical creatures are believed to emerge from the Dark Lake to hunt for filthy human souls to feed on their energy. Mavka is one of the forest lake's nymphs. When she meets Lukian, a biology whizz, she has one job: to bring him to her lake, where mermaids and other nymphs lie in wait. But instead of bringing about Lukian's ruin, Mavka falls in love with him. As her feelings grow stronger, she starts to realize that the mermaids will go to any length to keep her on the dark side.
