Teddy B Jan 27 The sheer magnetism and positivity exuding from this film is unshakeable. Errol Flynn's Robin Hood is the legend made flesh. The atmosphere never wears thin on good humour, and the writing is taut and fancy-free, presenting a pure exercise in fun fit for any and all audiences. To see a movie created for theaters when TV didn't exist or seldom in use, such as this film The Adventures of Robin Hood, was my lucky day. The colors shined, the stars, such as the actors mentioned above, radiated in their glorious CLASIC MOVIE STAR way, which, by the way, is just something a little more, a little stronger and more special are these stars, as their people on film screen such as Olivia de Havilland (as Maid Marian) beam across the screen without much technology. This is why their era and for a few decades after the release of this movie in 1938, CLASSIC MOVIE STARS stood out then and through today. Sure, today has movie stars, but their energies are much milder on the film screen. These stars in The Adventures of Robin Hood are special. Even with what some in today's advanced technology might say are wearing silly costumes that are less than real props, I never lost interest. My focus was on their characters and them as the actors presenting them for the overall story. I read or heard one time a casting agent say, "Don't bring props to auditions."   Ultimately, a possible meaning is, "it doesn't matter what you hold your hand use present the character as authentically as you can."  Or, as another great actor star, Vivien Leigh (did a great movie with De Havilland and worked well together)said, along with great producer Sam Goldwyn in Small World Interview (watch these interviews) summarize believe that authentic actors can play any parts don't have to be even of same origin that originally wrote unlike the critic they took, "no English actor play Checkoff play" was Leigh argument "doesn't matter if artists and know what doing" while young critic Ken Tynan then said needed to be "English to play English or stand out to untrained ear", Interesting and so limiting. Although time Tynan retracted these and many statements made in youth. As for a costume picture, somewhat subjective, yet one can argue what VivienLeigh says about these things in Small World Interview: "Truth is keynote of all acting" "mind is not truthful the costumes or whether you have fan in hand doesn't make a difference at all", meaning great, good acting delivers the part no prop or costume" and why this movie works today. No one knows the part or movie better than good actors.  Actors like these players let "no one own their asses" in telling them how they would deliver great acting, they knew what they were doing. They need freedom. Sure, the good producers and directors helped, but in terms of knowing how to bring the characters alive, trust in good actors like Flyn, Rains, Rathbone, De Havilland to name a few of the actors making this movie good and fun!  Good actors are often able to do different things, which makes sense, as actors have to be all sorts of types in movies. Yet one thing that stands the test of time with good actors is "they know what they are doing, with character, what to use in making it believable and real." Similar to great tennis champions, they don't need much direction, just give them the ball and watch them play the game. Oh, I know some actors need more guidance, babysitting, help and directors can help to a point. Yet directors should have confidence in giving a script, a revision, a change to an actor, and they can take it from there, the pros at least. The pros who have variety and can do something different in different "strikes of the ball" or "takes on scene" can be magic. Like pro actors here.  These stars in Adventures of Robin Hood know how to do it, create their characters via acting and their unique movie star characteristics deliver. These actors did so in Adventures of Robin Hood. What exactly is their persona that screams out? Well, as some have said, "I cannot exactly explain it but know when to see it."  Which helps make this movie never feel silly or dated while I watched it in October 2025, as the actors kept my interest and contribute immensely to the movie holding up over time. Yes, my attention was kept. I loved each scene, and actually, some in attendance at this movie in a theater clapped and clapped after scenes like happens in theaters and Broadway. Amazing to be in attendance at a movie that does this to an audience. It moves us. Sure story, script, all aspects of movie making, when people had to do everything in making a film with far less technological help, are in full, excellent force. This movie received recognition in some of these areas at the Academy for the Oscars and performed as one of the strongest movie ticket sales for the year it was released, showing this flick delivered by various performance evaluators. For me, I get reminded of why I love movies so damn much due to the people who acted in these movie stars that can act and bring a little special something to the screen. Watch this movie and other movies from different generations. It can be so much fun to find movies one likes from different time periods! I love the late1930s to mid 1940s and late 1960s to late 1970s! Although movies in all time periods, including today, interest me!
