Martin F @LuciferSam Aug 1 A film that is impossible to watch, annoying pretentious camera work, in and out, shaking.. Gave up after 15 minutes. If a story is any good, it needs to be watched, with a clear view.. This just gave me a headache. See more Rs A @RT80906270 Jul 27 The film does a great job of allowing the viewer to experience some of Van Gogh's insanity and disconnection from reality. Unfortunately, what might seem on the surface like a fine performance by Dafoe is impossibly far from Van Gogh's personality. Anyone who has read Van Gogh's letters and examined his life knows that he was an incredibly pretentious intellectual, extremely self-centered, and a serious parasite when it came to inflicting his personal needs on everyone around him. He was very much like the closet electric guitarist who has never had a job or a performing gig, is living off his relatives, and is full of loud opinions about publicly recognized musicians. I understand that depicting Van Gogh as he really was would alienate audiences. But Dafoe is SO sympathetic, so mellow, so understanding. Shot almost like a documentary with closeup, handheld, & POV shots that are immersive yet jarring. The idea that your life’s work is not for present people but a future history is powerful. Mikkelsen has a single scene & it’s the best one where a great actor runs away with great dialogue. The score is soring & there is pretty cinematography yet its purpose is to show the mental state of van Gogh & the abstract presentation does not make for an enjoyable watch.
