Is Blade Runner 2049 a masterpiece like its predecessor? Definitely not. It's not even a match for 2016's superb Arrival, the previous film from director Denis Villeneuve. Yet on its own terms, it's a dazzling achievement.

Simply stated one of the most important and best science fiction films ever made. Beautifully made and imagined, as one would expect. Multiple viewings are required as the film is texturally very deep. It is the perfect sequel to the original, and much deeper. Taking on some difficult themes, the sort of thing for which science fiction is the perfect medium. Ryan Gosling plays the replicant protagonist with deep sympathy showing multiple facets of this troubled soul looking for redemption or perhaps even life. It is a real marvel, don't trip up and try to compare to the original. Take it as it is.

Good to see this film teamed up with the first film in a double feature at IMAX. Perhaps a little slower in pace than the initial outing, but it still held the attention with a strong story which produced multiple permutations of ‘who/what’ would be the ‘miracle’ child. Faithful to the original with Harrison Ford appearing in the final third of proceedings to further consolidate the franchise. The product placement this time around was Johnny Walker still going strong in 2049. And … it still continues to rain heavily in LA in the future.
