DanTheMan 2 @DanTheMan2150AD 6d From its oppressive, rain-soaked opener to its triumphant, sun-lit ending, Death Rides a Horse is simply breathtaking to behold, stripped of all gimmicks and delivering revenge via white-hot lead; the title makes it all the sweeter. This is not a western about heroism so much as obsession, corruption and the brutal cost of trying to settle old debts. The performances from John Phillip Law and especially Lee Van Cleef are exceptional; the chemistry the duo share forms the spine of the film, with mutual suspicion gradually giving way to respect and, of course, there's Ennio Morricone's iconic score, adding suspense and emotion to every scene, flipping between haunting and energetic on a dime. More than half a century later, the bullets in Death Rides a Horse still hit with remarkable force; its atmosphere thick with regret and inevitability. See more Nick F @RT70468548 11/20/2024 Death Rides A Horse is a good attempt to make a Clint Eastwood-style Western but it falls well short of the mark. It has a good storyline, Spain nicely imitates Arizona, and it also stars the always-compelling Lee Van Cleef. But it is half an hour too long, and John Phillip Law, in only his second movie, is far too clean-cut and un-menacing to convincingly carry off his role as an avenging gunman. Made in 1967, this sprawling Western has both Van Cleef and Law as gunmen both seeking - for different reasons - revenge on a band of outlaws. Their desert trek is long and dusty and often far too talkative, though when the inevitable gunplay finale arrives, the action is well staged and well filmed and delivers a couple of surprise twists. While nowhere near classic Western standards, this film still offers just enough to be worth watching.
