11/08/2009 After "New York Doll" and Richard Dutcher's films, this is probably the best theatrical feature made by Mormons about Mormons. It's not a great film--I could have done without the voice over, and some other moments that felt a bit church video-ey--but overall it's a sweet, sincere, low-key movie about missionary work, with good performances and real characters, a nice low-budget independent-international aesthetic, and a few moments of quiet spirituality that are quite lovely. It's nice to see a movie about missionary work that acknowledges that the greatest lesson a religion mission can teach (in my opinion, as someone who admittedly has not had first-hand experience) is that the most important thing you can do is learn to love others in spite of and because of their differences--differences perceived and actual, in belief, in personality, in personal preferences, race, socioeconomic standing, whatever. I wish Mormon cinema was more experimental, but at least this missionary flick is about SISTERS rather than Elders. See more 12/07/2008 Some movies are made to entertain, and some are made to reflect upon reality. I think this movie is in the latter category. If you just want entertainment, you will not like this movie that much. If you want a window to what it means to be a Mormon sister missionary, you just can't beat this movie. And the camera work is very nice. There is NOTHING sappy about this film. I am so grateful this movie was made. I am glad the German language was not avoided - like Dutch largely was in the Best Two Years. See more 12/02/2008 Kind of like "The Best Two Years" from the sister missionary point-of-view - I guess you could call it "The Best Eighteen Months" - it's an honest portrayal of missionary life - warts and all. (I pretty much lived the same experience of getting along with a difficult companion.) Erin Chambers is great in the lead role. See more 12/01/2008 Have you seen The Best Two Years? K, now picture that with sisters. That's the basic gist of this movie. Not terribly innovative, bland and inoffensive, but the film turns out good performances, has a sweet little spirit to it, and some great cinematography. While I did like it considerably more the second time around, it's still kind of a "So what?" movie to me. If you've served a mission, you'll undoubtedly find parallels with your own experiences, but relatability can't trump blandness. See more Read all reviews
