Marco L @decatur555 1d Forgive Us All looks fantastic but spends far too much time behaving like a solemn family drama instead of using the infected threat at the heart of its world. It reminded me of the weakest Walking Dead episodes, where zombies exist somewhere in the background while grief, silence and personal trauma consume the story. The New Zealand landscapes are spectacular and Peter McCaffrey’s cinematography is easily the film’s strongest element, while its western atmosphere occasionally works very well. Unfortunately, the pacing is painfully slow, the emotional drama rarely lands and the infected become important far too late. There are ingredients here for a strong post-apocalyptic western-horror film, but too much empty seriousness gets in the way. Performances are mostly flat, with characters that never become people you care about. Without emotional grounding, the heavier themes fail to land, and the story struggles to pull you in. The screenplay is the weakest link, wandering without a clear path or purpose. Scenes hint at meaning, but nothing connects into a satisfying whole.
