Alex B @AlexBioni 2d The Most Relaxed Hitman Ever Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai is a great example of how a thin story can become something special through execution and style. The basic story is nothing new, but everything surrounding it feels authentic and carefully crafted. The setting, characters, and music create a cool, collected atmosphere that feels like an A24 film made 26 years early. Forest Whitaker is excellent as Ghost Dog, perfectly capturing the soft spoken man hiding a darker side. I loved the contrast between the samurai code and the mob code, and the slow burn pacing almost feels meditative. For a movie about a hitman, it is surprisingly calming. Some acting is uneven, and a few kills look funny, but that adds to its gritty indie charm. I also loved the editing, especially the opening shots of Ghost Dog driving as different images fade into one another to create one continuous moment. If you don't want to think about anything this works. For me the characters felt really flat and there is no build up or character development. The characters are introduced and from there on they each do exactly what you expect them to do. The plot provides no real background about who the character are and therefore they all feel 1-dimensional. I was bored pretty quickly. I don't really know how to tell it, but this movie grows on me even more everytime I watch it. It has the qualities of mafia movies with a depth that still eludes me somehow. Anyway, it's a must-see. And if you did not like it, you should watch it again.
