As Viktor Frankenstein (Kenneth Branagh) is dying he shares a tale of gruesome terror with a sea captain. Viktor, using previous experiments by a brilliant scientist, was able to bring a creature (Robert De Niro) assembled from body parts back to life. Once he realized how destructive his experiments had become, he abandoned the creature and tried to live a normal life with his fiancé (Helena Bonham Carter). The lonely creature seeks out Viktor and demands one of two things: a bride or revenge.

Critics Consensus

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is ambitious and visually striking, but the overwrought tone and lack of scares make for a tonally inconsistent experience.

It’s too bad that the filmmakers couldn’t include women in their reverence with the sort of understanding that Mary Shelley showed toward men. Go to Full Review

As a gothic horror tale, Branagh strives to infuse it with dark atmospheres and a solemn tone that serve to showcase a made-up Robert De Niro, but his noisy narrative often ends up stumbling on its own excessive theatricality. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Marc J @Marcel47 3d MS's Frankenstein, 1994 was a magnificent production with great direction by Branagh. Having recently read the book by Mary Shelley, I can say that the script was similar, but the critical ending was changed to the creature putting both Victor Frankenstein and himself in the same flame. The book had the creature going off to kill himself after taking care of Victor. The movie also had Elizabeth being brought back to life for himself, whereas the book had the creature blackmail Frankenstein to build a mate for him out of spare parts. I believe the film resolved the story more interestingly as Victor and the creature fight over the resurrected Elizabeth leading to her putting herself to death in a burst of flame. This bit of thought-provoking story-telling added to the depth of Frankenstein as a meaningful thriller, full of metaphors on man's ambition. See more Claudio C @Claudio666 Dec 8 Underrated Version of the Classic Story (12,113 – 07 Dec 2025) In 1794, in the Arctic Sea, Captain Robert Walton is a man obsessed to reach the North Pole, pushing his crew to the exhaustion. When his ship hits an iceberg, she is stranded in the ice. Out of the blue, Captain Walton and his men overhear a dreadful cry, and they see a stranger coming to the ship. He introduces himself as Victor Frankenstein and he tells the captain the story of his life since he was a little boy in Geneva. "Frankenstein" is an underrated version of the classic story. Directed by Kenneth Branagh, the dramatic story was not well accepted by the professional critics and many viewers. I saw this movie in 1995, in 2013 and I just saw it yesterday, and it is a great movie that has not aged. Unfortunately, I have never read the novel by Mary Shelley to compare it with this version with Guillermo Del Toro’s one. My vote is eight.
