Critics Consensus

Despite Vanessa Kirby's strong performance, Night Always Comes falters with thin plotting, ill-crafted social critique, and underdeveloped characters.

Kirby is a little too glossy and glowing of complexion to convince as a woman who works three jobs and gets most of her nutrition from bar snacks and bourbon. Go to Full Review

It’s a thoughtful, if grim, movie, and Kirby is outstanding. Go to Full Review

It gets the style right and Kirby is first-rate, but the movie is a chore to watch. Go to Full Review

Perhaps Night Always Comes’ biggest strength though is its insistence that there are no easy answers. The bittersweet, melancholic ending won’t be for everyone, but it feels fitting. Go to Full Review

Parvin B @Parvin 18h I've just watched it. I loved it so much! Wanted to see if others appreciate it, too. I got disappointed when I realized that not many understood the key message of this movie. It's about apathy of the U.S.A. Cruelness and emotionlessness that brings capitalism. Lynett's mom is the depiction of the U.S.A. A mother that doesn't love her own kid, her daughter; who doesn't give a shit how she's going to survive. Lynett is the nation - a nation is like a child with a loveless, careless, apathical mother. All she needed throughout her lifetime was love, care and protection, which she didn't get and will never get. Throughout the movie my heart got broken so many times. I wanted to protect Lynett, tell her "it wasn't your fault. When you were a kid you had to be protected. Everything will be fine, and I love you." And I wanted to smash the mom's head to the wall so she would finally wake up. But she will never wake up. Lynett had to save herself. Not for sensitive viewers, but amazing filmmaking and acting! See more Stoner J. @Stoner Apr 22 It’s a mere decent crime thriller, up until the really bad ending See more Arthur R @RT88125953 Mar 14 Hollow with a genuinely awful plot and some of the worst performances I've seen this year. Never comes close to being as gritty as this tale needs to be. Night always comes, thankfully, so do the ending credits See more R B @RT04347138 Feb 19 The overall reception of this film might suggest that you should avoid it, which is what I did for a while, but now that I've seen it, I can both recognise the criticisms and appreciate its good points - of which there are plenty. I say give it a try on your streaming service and hopefully, like me, you'll be pleasantly surprised. See more Read all reviews
