The Doctor is that rare specimen--a big studio movie that treats the audience (and its own characters) with intelligence and respect. It cuts close to the bone. Go to Full Review

In the wrong hands, this material could have been simply a cautionary tale, but Hurt and his director, Randa Haines, who also collaborated on Children of a Lesser God, make it into the story of a specific, flawed, fascinating human being. Go to Full Review

It holds the interest but hasn't a lot in the way of profundity. Go to Full Review

There is a deal of designer blood in The Doctor, and much heartache. But little pain, dirty or financial anxiety. Go to Full Review

Marshall L @MarsRT 3 days ago This movie accurately tells what people go through in a hospital/doctor’s office in seeking help from a doctor. Also, what a bit-h the ENT doctor was. Marshall, Palm Desert, CA See more Cork B @RT87142816 5 days ago Doctor is a solid outing with a solid cast and character driven story line. That all said, it feels like Oscar bait, with each "here is a taste of your own medicine" scene bludgeoning the audience with that little gold statue. All the right stuff is there, but it feels very forced. And what is up with the brain cancer lady? It feels like there is an affair there but the writers never took the time to finish the dialogue. OTOH, the scary hospital times and treatments made me appreciate my family and my own life more. See more Alain E @AlainE Oct 14, 2026 I practiced medicine for forty years without encountering all the stereotypes I met in the first twenty five minutes of this opus. In the o-ending scene a team performs a high risk operation to repair a transected aorta. Forget that the patient appears to have a heart rate of 60 or 70, grossly half of what a critically injured young man would have. When the operation goes well the team in the OR behaves as if they have a party. Later the doctor is examined by a female ENT who is the prototype of cold professional. No interaction with the patient other to ask Hurt to stick out his tongue and so forth. When she is done, she tells him what is going to happen and leaves the room! No good bye, sorry. Nothing! And the patient is an esteemed colleague. Physicians simply don’t behave like this, unless they want to be viewed as basket cases. No need to see the rest despite the high ratings. See more Keith B @RT94924513 Jun 21, 2026 Somewhat predictable, yet the acting and dialogue carried the day... And it is a touching story. I guess I might be biased, as a physician who also had a head/neck cancer and almost bought the farm... So it had a special meaning to me, and much of the patient experience certainly rang true. Having said that, I'm an old country doc, and I think my patients liked me before I got cancer. lol! See more Ishara L @RT56911979 Sep 26, 2024 Movie #1531 Again, a movie I would have never watched if I didn't make my list the ways I did. Pleasantly surprised with this, gentle and empathetic film making in a very restrained, silent-observer style. William Hurt may have allegedly been not such a pleasant person, but he was a fine actor. I enjoyed it but it was a very... white movie. Cinematographically, it was very non-intrusive and realistic, which is fine, but doens't underline the complex emotions. Bit sterile for me in that regard. But Randa Haines is an excellent filmmaker.
