Critics Consensus

The Firm is a big studio thriller that amusingly tears apart the last of 1980s boardroom culture and the false securities it represented.

Angelique T @RT64568713 3 days ago Looking forward to rewatching this again See more Jacob W @RT17896586 5 days ago Of all the John Grisham adaptations this is the best. It’s fast paced with an all star cast of the time. TC is well cast as Mitch. The story based on the book is well done At its peak Grisham novel adaptations were all the rage with Hollywood crying out. With more books being written and a follow up to the firm crime movies are hot See more Diana H @Mercedy Oct 24, 2026 Hackman, Wilford Brimley, Holly Hunter, Hal Holbrook, Ed Harris, and David Straithairn take a standard script and breathe life into the characters, lifting this film out of the ordinary. Plus, every party involved has a life or death stake in the heart-thumping outcome. Tom’s brother is in prison. Tom is in his own prison. If he agrees to inform for the FBI, he will lose his license to practice law. If he leaves the firm, they’ll track him down and he’ll die in an 'accident'. Tom finds a way out. But much of the planning is done offscreen so the execution of the plan is confusing. That doesn’t matter. Sydney Pollack and a splendid editor, have us on the edge of our seats. Unanswered questions: Why does Mitch (Tom) suddenly care about his brother? When and how did Mitch get all the clients to sign releases? Who is Elvis, again? But the plot holes don’t matter. Just enjoy watching Tom masterfully save himself from the forces of evil. You always root for Tom. Can’t help yourself. See more Jean F @RT52751482 Oct 13, 2026 JEANNE TRIPPLEHORN ruins the movie. All scenes have her wide-eyed and concerned-looking. And she has ZERO Chemistry with Tom Cruise. GET HER OUT of this movie and it will be a 3.5 star movie (minimum).
