Anthony B @RT36940214 13h 10 Cloverfield Lane is an excellent psychological thriller that honestly didn’t need the alien payoff. John Goodman is terrifying because you spend almost the entire movie wondering whether he’s a paranoid lunatic, telling the truth, or somehow both. The bunker setting and uncertainty about what’s actually happening outside create more tension than any monster could. I liked the entire movie, but I would’ve preferred if it ended without explicitly showing the aliens. Leaving the outside world ambiguous would’ve made the ending much more unsettling and preserved what made the rest of the movie so effective. Some cheesy moments, but worth a watch for Goodman’s psychotic character. The movie makes more sense if you’ve seen Cloverfield. Spoiler alert: my biggest gripe with this movie was the ending. If the alien monster thing is even remotely related to the one in original Cloverfield, then the military couldn’t even destroy this thing. Yet she kills it with one Molotov cocktail? So ridiculous. After Michelle wakes up in an underground bunker, Howard tells her that the outside world has been devastated and that leaving means certain death. The brilliance of the film is that it never asks you to simply believe him, it makes you question him. And then it makes you question yourself for believing him. John Goodman is extraordinary as Howard. He can be warm and paternal one moment, then quietly terrifying the next. The performance works because you are never quite sure which version of him is real. Is he protecting Michelle? Is he manipulating her? Is he genuinely trying to save her? The movie keeps those possibilities alive just long enough to make every interaction uncomfortable.
