What to Know

Critics Consensus

Roland Emmerich's 2012 provides plenty of visual thrills, but lacks a strong enough script to support its massive scope and inflated length.

Cusack, with his one-of-the-guys face and his nice way with child actors, does creditable work as an Average American Dad trying to put things right. Go to Full Review

2012 is reminiscent of yesteryear '80s shlock-tastic blockbusters -- total popcorn entertainment with ridiculous dialogue and impossible situations and special effects that will boggle the brain for a good two-plus hours. Go to Full Review

Everything you’re expecting from 2012 is exactly what you’re going to get…Utterly impossible by any stretch of the imagination, the movie is a cheesy, one-dimensional, epic-sized spectacle that does exactly what it promises to—destroy the Earth. Go to Full Review

Ben B. @Boldbravebigbenbrown 2d Corny, campy, well-financed apocalypse fun! End of the world disaster movies have a long standing tradition for imagining the unimaginable and doing it in a way that has you yelling common sense actions that are inevitably ignored by overacted characters. 2012 is no exception! With a fairly stacked cast shackled to a hopelessly untalented one, I am not rushing to hand out Oscars but I did have a lot fun with it. Special effects are the star of this movie and you can tell from its $200M price tag but clearly it paid off for most audiences with $700M box office haul. While I doubt I'll watch this again any time soon I did enjoy the themes, goofy performances, and stunning death scenarios. Cusack carried it with his dead pan dad ethos, while Woody jumped in and wackied it up as Charlie the not-so-crazy-after-all conspiracy guru, while Oliver Platt and Thandiwe Newton acted their tails off. Danny Glover seems a little out of his element as the somber, selfless POTUS but I liked seeing him in the role. All in all worth at least one watch, but I won't be adding it to my annual watch list any time soon. Watch this one with your god-fearing uncle and your disaster-prone wife!
