In 480 B.C. a state of war exists between Persia, led by King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), and Greece. At the Battle of Thermopylae, Leonidas (Gerard Butler), king of the Greek city state of Sparta, leads his badly outnumbered warriors against the massive Persian army. This depersonalizes the major players in the battle between the Spartans and the Persians to such a degree that one ends up feeling more sympathy for the shields that end up receiving the brunt of the sword blows and arrow piercings.

Very cool story, artistry, and action. Very violent. Excellent comic book style movie, based on a Frank Miller graphic novel, similar style to Sin City.

It amazes me, watching this in 2026, that this movie is largely forgotten. I don't know when the last time was that I heard anyone mention it. It is absolutely outstanding. I love the art direction. The choreography is so well thought out. Sure, there isn't much dialogue, but what there is, totally lands. The other amazing thing about this movie is that Zack Snyder has not made anything near this level since Watchmen, and that was over 15 years ago. He keeps getting big chances, but nothing even approaches any of his early works. I really wish he could find whatever magic he lost.
