Critics Consensus

A clever, offbeat romantic comedy, 500 Days of Summer is refreshingly honest and utterly charming.

This is a film which tries so hard to be fresh and different it loses sight of the bigger picture, is just kind of empty somehow, and rather beefs up the 'rom' and the heartache at the expense of the 'com.' Go to Full Review

The principals perform their roles nicely, but there really isn't much for them to do. Undoubtedly, the age gap has influenced my negative response. Go to Full Review

What makes this movie so seamless is the spot-on performances of the two lead actors and the very relatable story of what happens when love--and life--happens. Go to Full Review

Don’t call this film a romantic comedy, because with that label comes so many bad associations. Instead, call this a slice of romance, with all the potential elation and heartbreak offered therein. Go to Full Review

The thing about (500) Days of Summer is that you could switch the leads and not miss a beat. Deschanel and Gordon-Levitt are that good. Go to Full Review

Ian R 10h Might just be me, but this was devoid of any story. I'm a fan of Joseph Gordon Levitt and enjoyed his performance. Chloe Grace Moretz, although still a child at the time, stole every scene she is in. Not at all the movie I was expecting to see. However, it did capture the ability of women to be heartless. See more Darrin G. @realwildchild76 2d My favorite film of 2009. This film succeeds in showcasing both the highs and lows of relationships over the course of 500 days presented here in random order. Watching this film I often had the been there done that realization of how true to life the story is in comparison to my own experiences. Outstanding lead actors and also great music within. See more John F @Fries6511 Feb 16 The cinematography is beautiful, and the story alone makes this movie worth seeing. See more retro b @retrobite Feb 1 A work that portrays urban alienation in its purest state. Tom designs cards for a corporation that commodifies feelings; his vision of love is equally extractivist. He needs her to be unattainable to keep his desire functioning. Did you see the karaoke scene? Desire is always the desire of the Other. What he hates in the end is not that she left him, but that she proved to have a desire of her own that does not include him. It is a decoration of heartbreak made to be digestible for the aspirational middle class; the tragedy of form over life. True love tears your skin off; it doesn't have you listening to The Smiths while you cry in a glass elevator. Open the windows and let the dirty street air in, because this movie smells like cheap mall perfume! See more Lily M @lilixxmoon Jan 26 An unexpected film that turns many of the romantic comedy tropes on it's head. Great chemistry between Zooey and Joseph Gordon Levitt. Stellar soundtrack. Quirky and surprisingly more depth that you would expect. So many viewers have a different take on the film and I think that is a feat in itself as a testament to it's genius. It's a film that viewers continue to analyze and encourages a discussion on the evolving landscape of relationships, breakups, and romance for the millennial generation. It's nuanced but clever. Witty but flawed. Charming but eye rolling at times all at the same time. I highly recommend anyone watch this film in its entirety and not just stick to the short tiktok reels out there. See more Arthur B @Arthur638 Jan 18 It’s different, fresh and is a rollercoaster of emotions teaching a lesson on how some good relationships have to end for you to learn See more Read all reviews
