Dimitri M @Corelli Jul 18 Wonderfully cast and beautifully shot. Truly recreates Shakespeare's world and time, although making his retirement seem a little too elegiac and grim. Hard to believe Shakespeare didn't have a little mischief left in his manner, despite his circumstances. Branagh looks a little too faithfully like the portraits of Shakespeare, and the women in his life seem too uniformly bitter, but McKellen does a great turn as the Earl of Southampton, and the whole is marvelously authentic of its time and wonderfully acted and directed and a convincing projection of Shakespeare in his retirement. The sets and costumes were beautiful, including some wonderfully odd hats with unusually tall crowns. Kenneth Branagh’s remarkable makeup transformed him completely into Shakespeare, and the music suited the subdued mood. The two daughters occasionally overacted, but the film ended especially well, which led Lorna to raise her rating to 5 stars. Ian McKellen is magnificent, & Kenneth Branagh is utterly brilliant as Shakespeare. Dame Judy Dench is excellent as always. I enjoyed this film much more than “Hamnet” earlier this year, & it was remarkable with excellent performances, too. This is an imaginative & inspiring piece of filmmaking that makes me appreciate Shakespeare in his final years with his family as a husband & father rather than as only a legend poised on immortality. I will say the performance of William Shakespeare was better here than in hamnet. I still enjoyed hamnet much more than this version. I also enjoyed the performance of Anne.
