In 1985, Russian boxer Ivan Drago killed former U.S. champion Apollo Creed in a tragic match that stunned the world. Against the wishes of trainer Rocky Balboa, Apollo's son Adonis Johnson accepts a challenge from Drago's son -- another dangerous fighter. Yes, Creed II is a boxing film. Yes, it is a story that we have seen played out at least seven previous times. But there is so much more under the surface, and that is where Creed II shines.

In conclusion, Creed II is a solid film with a convincing performance of Michael B. Jordan who asserts himself in the character. This sequel is what the fans expected, but it must be admitted that it provides few innovative elements.

Creed II starts off swinging with a genius premise and explosive entertainment. The plot feels inevitable for the new Creed-focused franchise; channeling the best notes of Rocky IV while carving out a fresh path. Also on point is the score, with the cinematography capturing the action perfectly. Jordan and Munteanu are nothing short of dynamic in the ring together, and their fights are arguably the most brutal in the series to date. The themes here of parenthood, from the Creeds coping with unexpected hardships to Rocky's estranged connection with his son are all excellent. Especially compelling is Dolph Lundgren's subtle yet layered performance as Drago given the relationship with his own son. While Creed II isn't as emotionally compelling or deep as the fighter's first bout, it's still an entertaining knock-out of a film.

Sure it's fairly similar to Rocky 3, but it still manages to hit a homer with how the film it separates itself. Not to mention the nostalgia it gives you with the return of Ivan Drago
