Critics Consensus

Crimson Peak offers an engaging -- albeit somewhat slight -- diversion driven by a delightfully creepy atmosphere and director Guillermo del Toro's brilliant knack for unforgettable visuals.

This is headily sumptuous, seductive filmmaking, beautiful and grotesque, with the best-realised ghosts since del Toro’s own The Devil’s Backbone (2001). Go to Full Review

What [Guillermo] del Toro had in mind when shooting Crimson Peak was probably a stylish gothic period piece in the same acclaimed lane as Pan's Labyrinth. Unfortunately, Crimson Peak fails to work on that level. Go to Full Review

Not only did I love every silly, gothic, gorgeous minute of Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak, I'm actually suspicious of those who didn't. Go to Full Review

'Crimson Peak' is a worthy Gothic yarn from Guillermo del Toro, abundantly rich in dreary atmospherics and made great by its two deliciously playful villains. Go to Full Review

Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak will likely only appeal to viewers unfamiliar with Jane Eyre or Henry James or Daphne du Maurier or, heck, even The Silence of the Lambs. Go to Full Review

Chastain, Wasikowska, and Hiddleston do their best, but the writing of “Crimson Peak“ comes off far more slight than Del Toro’s previous work. It lives in the shadow of similar films, but with a far more unrelieved energy. Go to Full Review

Caitlin M @NobodyAskedMe 1 day ago The aesthetics of this film are incredible! I watched it for Halloween, and although it's a bit creepy sometimes, it's also very emotional. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I believe Guillermo del Toro is truly such a gift to film; his Gothic genre is always top-notch. Love Mia Wasikowska, she's perfect for any role of an odd, troubled young woman, just trying to navigate life. Jessica Chastain delivers a gripping performance, and Tom Hiddleston, I think, is a gift to mankind. Frankly, he's not in enough emotional, haunted Gothic films for my liking. He weeps so beautifully. 9/10 - Would recommend! See more Tony W @Neverending80s 2 days ago A perfect gothic horror romantic film that’s beautiful to look at , but is thin on plot, drags during the second act, but pulls it all together in the third act amazingly. See more Joe R @RT23987211 3 days ago My wife stayed awake on the couch for this entire movie. Enough said. See more Phillip C @Daskar22 Oct 23, 2026 Predictable. Predictable. And more predictable. I was not a fan of this movie at all. It was overly serious and utterly predictable. The 1 1/2 stars are for the costumes and the sets and the actors doing the best they could with the most predictable script possible. Overall though, I thought this movie sucked. The writing was mundane. The candle-dancing scene was ridiculous and pretentious. And it was a story I have seen so many times before. Which isn't terrible, if its done well. This wasn't. I even like cheesy schlock films when they are made well. This was just boring. And it is hard to root for characters that seem to be so clueless. Definitely not a horror movie but very good at making you think "whats next?". Will be rewatchung, especially with such a phenomenal cast! See more Read all reviews
