Jeffrey P 01/23/2022 Well done mockumentary that is laughable at times. Also, like many documentaries of a bygone era, it may put you to sleep. See more 02/05/2020 Balancing satire that is simultaneously realistic and speculative, hilarious and infuriating, incisive and irreverent, this pastiche mockumentary by Kevin Willmott—who won an Oscar for the similarly subversive BLACKKKLANSMAN—mixes Ken Burns-style pseudo-historicism with parodies of modern media in order not just to imagine what if the South had won the war, but more pressingly, what in America would change over the following century? Willmott's devastating answer is that not would be terribly different, a matter of degree rather than meaningful distinction, as racist stereotypes and structural disenfranchisement still hold sway in our country. Just look at the ongoing debate over removing Confederate monuments and flags to see that the Civil War ended not when the South lost, but when the North stopped fighting. See more Read all reviews
