The Gheorghius, a devout Romanian Norwegian couple, resettle in a village set in a distant fjord where they become close to their neighbors, the Halbergs. Their children bond despite their different education. When adolescent Elia Gheorghiu shows up at school with some bruises on her body, the community asks itself if the traditional education that the Gheorghiu children get from their parents would have anything to do with it.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Presenting a knotty moral dilemma and refusing to provide easy answers, Cristian Mungiu's superbly well-acted Fjord has a chilly surface that belies a heated humanity beneath the frost.

“Fjord,” the latest provocation from Romania’s Cristian Mungiu, is good for starting conversations if not arguments, but it’s a little tricker than it seems on the surface. Go to Full Review

It is interesting; how could it not be, in this land of casual avalanches and provocative questions raised about what is legal, what is fair, and what is right? Go to Full Review

The conflict occurs in the lovely if cold -- in more ways than one -- setting of Norway, where striking visuals of avalanches and icy, crystal-clear waters help writer/director Cristian Mungiu show and tell the lengthy story with equally frigid flair. Go to Full Review

Set in a small town in a Norwegian fjord, Cristian Mungiu’s "Fjord" dramatizes the legal and social polarization between the conservative Christian Gheorghius family’s values in conflict with their greater Norwegian community’s progressive practices. Go to Full Review

Andro 19 hrs ago Controversial reality of so called civilized world! See more jesse v 21 hrs ago other than this film being tangled by 10 different studios, this started as a slice of life of a European family living their lives. then the school staff gets wind of the kids being disciplined differently at home, and then the story becomes a spotlight on social issues of CPS in all of Europe. this movie is mostly the antithesis of Bad Apples. bizarrely, there was a super wide shot where you have to play Where's Waldo to find who's talking. the Norwegians always make the lives of other Europeans difficult. this film spells out ALL the nuance of this social issue where it became less engaging after the first act. the ending is basically the parents realizing that they could just go back to their home country with no reprecussions. See more resa 22 hrs ago Thought-provoking and very well acted. Ending was not at all how I expected. insight into how persecution of beliefs is often allowed by majorities and foisted upon minorities under the guise of “do-gooderism” . Made me never want to visit any country that encourages censorship of beliefs. See more Michael L 1 day ago A gently paced movie, with good character development and lovely scenery. See more A L R 1 day ago Quite a story on a forever debated hot topic on how parents should raise and discipline their children. See more Isaac M 2 days ago Fjord is quite an interesting film about a Romanian family who settles into a rural Norwegian town where only to be facing a serious allegation of child abuse and physical harm. I do like the performances from Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve, Cristian Mungiu’s direction and story, the themes of immigration, discrimination against minorities and the battle between traditional and/or religious values vs progressive values, the cinematography and the editing. Overall, Fjord is very good. I can smell some Oscar nominations. See more Read all reviews
