The model here should perhaps have been the Ranown Cycle: inexpensive but beautiful and brisk character-driven westerns none of which are longer than 80 minutes. Still, Frontier Crucible does look lovely. Go to Full Review
Frank Scheck The Hollywood Reporter Dec 2
While it’s a mostly solid effort that will play just fine on cable and VOD, Frontier Crucible is unlikely to revive the theatrical fortunes of the Western genre that seems to ebb and flow in popularity. Go to Full Review

It’s nice to see filmmakers playing around with genre rather than being shackled to it. That creative freedom is what keeps “Frontier Crucible” from being just another trip to the Old West. Go to Full Review

This gory tale was clearly made by people who love the Western genre, and it's beautiful to look at, but it's unfortunately missing that certain something that would have made it memorable. Go to Full Review

The film aspires to slowly raise tensions until they boil over, but things are too neat, too clean, and too predictable for the anticipated thrills to be found or felt. Go to Full Review

As it explores morality and machismo on the American frontier, this slow-burning Western captures some striking rural landscapes but struggles to raise the dramatic stakes. Go to Full Review

andy Dec 15 Horrible. Left after 30 minutes. Have never seen such bad acting in an American film. See more Andrea L @SalviesMom556 2d While the female lead's delivery is very odd - stilted, the performances of Thomas Jane and Armie Hammer are very well done. Over and above all of that is the performance of Myles Clohessy! He exudes Old West and heroism. While strong, intelligent, male leads are hard to find in Hollywood today, Mr. Clohessy brings an aura of strength, bravery, and, yes, sex appeal to his portrayal. The movie is a slow burn, but worth it. I hope to see Myles Clohessy's star continue to rise. See more Rochelle W @ChelleWilliams Jan 25 Yes, this film was a little predictable, but considering the garbage Hollywood spews out on the regular this was a wonderful change of pace. My husband and I never agree on anything to watch together but we both enjoyed this film. He had no idea who the main actor was, and attributed his excellent portrayal to the extent of Clint Eastwood. I agree to an extent, yes he's supposed to be stoic, but I do believe Myles gives away a lot of his character with his eyes. People these days are just to blind to see true depth of character. Some see flat acting because they are too attuned to flash bang flash bs nonsense that they cannot connect with a character that could have been real. The modern world is too wrapped up in nonsensical crap that we have gone so far from what are history was or what may have been. I do believe there is a lot more to Myles than these fools give him credit for. If you can really appreciate acting as an artwork you can easily lose yourself in the eyes of a character See more Irwin T @IrwinTang Jan 20 The female character has a particular way of speaking. Accept it and move on; you will enjoy this film as a suspenseful work set before a panoramic desert wallpaper. The old man is masterfully portrayed and the villains are interesting and three-dimensional. The central relationships are adulterated by the impurities of reality. Factors in life make marriage and fatherhood not exactly ideal. The violence is intense but not gratuitous and the camera cuts away sometimes. The ultimate outcome is foreseen in some respects, but still fun to follow through with. See more Eric J. @infringed Jan 11 It’s not rare for a script to be this poorly written or for the acting to be this bad. But what makes this movie uniquely tragic is that the camera work, editing, soundtrack and graphics are all equally awful.
