Daniel Day-Lewis is utterly overpowering, and DiCaprio solidly holds his own. However, the climax is deeply disappointing—an outright mess, to be blunt. It felt as though the central theme of personal revenge was completely buried beneath the violent, chaotic backdrop of 19th-century New York. His portrayal of Bill Cutting (Based on William Poole) is one of the most formidable and terrifying personalities ever put to the screen. Daniel is a magnetic force of nature and his towering presence just captivates you in every scene he is in. It's actually so intimidating that it feels like every other character is trapped in his presence and absolutely no one in the film escapes the man's wrath. Daniel’s character has class and etiquette but at the same time he is one of the most brutal and cruel individuals ever scripted. His calm and charismatic mannerisms paired with this brutal ambition to rule New York is for me one of the most inspiring performances in my lifetime, and it will always stick in my head as a masterclass example of acting. It's not a perfect film. I actually think it's best described as a flawed masterpiece, but It's a truly immersive experience of 1850’s New York. 8 / 10 See more Josh G @Parsifal83 Jul 31 An ambitious but uneven historical epic that falls short of Scorsese's best work. It's overlong, several scenes and stylistic choices haven't aged particularly well, and not every performance lands. Great story, great writing and great performances by Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel Day Lewis. But having a big buildup and then no actual battle at the end was very anticlimactic. There is no narrative except for one minimal thing, which on a scale of one to ten in how intriguing it is, is about a 1.5.
