Ghost in the Cell’s thin plot is really an excuse for Anwar to reel off his hitlist: he takes aim at cronyism, institutional brutality, private militias, secret mistresses, lapsed political idealism and the general degrading influence of money. Go to Full Review

The audacity is jaw-dropping, and the giddy WTF-ery begins early and does not let up throughout. A cast of likable convicts further up the entertainment value, making this the most fun Indonesian horror-comedy set in a haunted prison you’ll see this year. Go to Full Review

Ghost in the Cell, like most of Anwar’s films, flouts convention and is all the more exciting for it. Go to Full Review

Ghost in the Cell feels like a hamster in a wheel, treading the same ground over and over again. People dancing and praying to get rid of their red auras and brawling constantly while a ghost mangles people with rage issues only goes so far. Go to Full Review

“Ghost in the Cell” is single-minded in its intentions, and the ending makes it fittingly obvious. But even if you set aside the political prism, the film works well as an exceptional specimen of superlative horror (and comedy) filmmaking. Go to Full Review

Sometimes you need a vengeful demon to remind you about hope, and sometimes you need a good laugh amidst the horrors. Ghost in the Cell delivers on both counts. Go to Full Review

Leonard E @RT22414378 3 days ago You definitely feel the run time of 1 hour and 45 minutes. Its okay, the humor is kinda funny sometimes, sometimes its not. The death scenes are pretty creative. If youre looking for a horror movie and cant find anything, id suggest this for you See more Faza87 T @RT21876153 4 days ago I never watch Joko Anwar movies before, but after I watch this movie, this is the only best Indonesian movie I've ever watch from Joko Anwar. The blood and gore, horror, sadistic, brutal, dark comedy, politic satire, etc. Is the reason why I love this movie. It is the story of a reporter who is framed for the grisly murder of his Editor-in-Chief and ends up in a maximum security prison, where dangers from the brutal prisoners are only matched by the sadistic prison guards. The story turns from a violent prison picture into a violent and gory horror film when the demon that caused the reporter’s downfall is now eviscerating members of the prison population. The circumstances cause enemies to band together to strategize how to overcome this supernatural enemy. The movie is very engaging and very well done. The Direction is good. The film could have taking the turn from humorous to silly; however, Anwar did a good job of keep the guardrails on to create elements of shock and horror just when you felt like the film was getting too lightheaded. The characters are intentionally cartoonish in many ways, but these elements serve the execution of the story. See more MarGaret W @FilmVersusMovie Oct 13, 2026 I wish there was a way to slow this down when the Actors are Speed-talking in their Nitro-induced Dialect...or better yet, just a good English Dub job would help this Film immensely. As is, it's a bit of a Brain-drain: "Less CHAT => More SPLAT", indeed. See more Slim J @hotslimjim Oct 8, 2026 Kind of boring. Lots of talking and talking See more Read all reviews
