The original film worked because it was about a group of pragmatic, mismatched scientists solving tactical problems in a believable world. Here, competency is replaced with cheap slapstick improvisation, unbearable characters, and an arrogance that treats the audience with utter contempt. When the product failed, the studio deployed the usual script. Anyone who disliked it was instantly labeled a chauvinist or a misogynist. That victimization tactic is the final refuge of talentless filmmakers. The audience did not reject the cast for being women; we rejected terrible writing, unfunny jokes, and the desecration of an iconic legacy.
