What to Know

Critics Consensus

A gift for long-suffering fans after numerous subpar sequels, David Bruckner's Hellraiser unlocks the puzzle box for getting this franchise back on the right track.

Audience Says

The 2022 Hellraiser is better than a lot of the other films in this franchise, but it's still nowhere near as scary or exciting as the original.

What works most about the new Hellraiser are its leads. Odessa A’zion’s performance makes up for a lot of what the script lacks. Go to Full Review

The elaborate new Cenobite designs owe as much to Guillermo del Toro’s bioclockwork as Barker’s S&M body mods, but yet again the emissaries of Hell stand around being philosophically evil rather than doing much of anything. Go to Full Review

The re-imagined Cenobites are off putting and sometimes horrifying, which is fabulous. Jamie Clayton as The Priest aka lady pinhead is something to behold, and strangely sexless as a character. Go to Full Review

It may be the third-best Hellraiser movie, but you really have to have seen fifth-through-eleventh best to know what a relief that is. Go to Full Review

In David Bruckner’s 2022 renditionof Hellraiser, things change. He has no intention of remaking the same film and goes with his own screenwriters to helm a modern version of a tale that isn’t easy to dig into. Go to Full Review

Nick H @RT12374619 2 days ago I watched it when it originally dropped and I watch it again every year around Halloween time. The actress for pinhead or the priest put on a great performance as the character as it was taken from the inspiration of the hell priestess from the comics, and the fact that they killed off the annoying people first was fine with me because it made it even better. By the beginning you kinda had a feeling who was going to walk away and who was going to be killed. But hey you can still be shocked when someone gets a good shot in and sacrifices themselves for the sake of the team. But again the movie brought back the franchise in a positive light but only fans of the series can spot the easter eggs. See more Dan M @DanTheMan87 Oct 24, 2026 Wow. This movie is bad. Really bad. The acting is bad, the creative decisions are bad, the script is bad, the practical effects are bad, the cenobites look like they picked up their costumes from Party City, the main character is downright detestable and not easy on the eyes, the supporting characters are dumb to the point of absurdity, they gender swapped Pinhead and of course the main character's brother is (I'm not going to say it here, but you know what I mean). I've got no problem with those things in a vacuum, but it's so obvious what they're doing. The level of kowtowing is unreal. If you can see your way past all that somehow, the experience is a (hopefully) forgettable one that drags on endlessly to an unsatisfying conclusion. Dear Lord, please give me those 2 hours back. See more Cole M @StoneColeStunna Oct 15, 2026 I enjoyed this more than I expected. A solid story with a strong lead, this film put Hellraiser back on track. There has been some flat out doozies in the Hellraiser franchise, some of the worst horror movies of all time. I’m happy to say, this film was extra decent which is more than I can say for most of these movies. What I enjoyed: Odessa A’Zion’s performance The score The story What I didn’t like Some of the supporting cast While I enjoyed Jamie Clayton’s performance, I didn’t like the decision to make pinhead a woman. This didn’t kill the movie for me like it did with a lot of people, it’s more of a nitpick. Overall, I enjoyed what this movie offered. I am glad Clive Barker is back involved with the franchise, you could tell. If you like Hellraiser, check out this remake. See more Carlos H @carloshenriquec Oct 12, 2026 A great, fun, and terrifying experience. I simply loved many of the artistic choices made in this film. The soundtrack is incredible, making its presence felt from the very first seconds. The direction is excellent, and the cinematography successfully immerses us in that world of pain and nightmares. The cast is amazing, with a standout performance by Odessa A'zion; she possesses a screen presence and a unique magnetism that make it impossible to look away. Her hairstyle is worth a mention, too—it’s simply fantastic and evokes the styles of the 80s (the decade the original film was released). I also appreciated that the climax takes place in a remote, seemingly abandoned mansion—a nod to the conventions of the genre in past decades. It is also symbolic that the wealthy character's home—once a setting for orgies and gatherings—effectively serves as a gateway for those creatures. I really liked the relationship between Riley and Matt, and the ending broke my heart. See more Brandon L @RT44401498 Oct 12, 2026 Completely forgettable. Does not feel like a movie about extreme sadism. Hellraiser films tend to suffer because they want to sell them to teenie-boppers rather than make cult classics. See more Read all reviews
