Critics Consensus

Featuring lots of guts and gore, Hostel is a wildly entertaining corpse-filled journey -- assuming one is entertained by corpses, guts, and gore, that is.

Whether or not this kind of horror movie is your cup of tea, you have to at least admire Roth for the daring and creativity with which he illustrates that concept. Go to Full Review

The first act's filler, otherwise it's a squirmer. Bring a bucket. Go to Full Review

It’s definitely exploitative. From the generous heaping of bare tits, to the sinkfuls of mangled limbs, it’s not purporting to be high art. However... it does take extra care into providing a framework for these exploitative elements to exist believably. Go to Full Review

Inelegant, schlocky, and full-on? Sure. But it’s also a relentless B-movie hitting your nerves with a blood-soaked meat pounder. Go to Full Review

This movie is rough all around. The gore was well done and was something different we hadn't seen before in a horror film. Go to Full Review

Juandi Oct 9, 2026 I enjoyed rewatching this in theaters. I’ve always found it underrated in the horror conversations. A lot of horror fans don’t seem to like Eli Roth’s work but I think this one is a solid entry not to be taken so seriously. See more Arnold Oct 3, 2026 I was very happy to see this movie return to theaters for a first time watch been dreaming to see this movie in theaters for a long time I watch this movie at home as a teenager. See more Kev @RT02615462 6 hrs ago Hostel (2005) delivers plenty of the dark, suspenseful gore that horror fans crave, but multiple rewatches expose serious flaws in its logic and writing. The most glaring plot hole involves the characters' sheer stupidity. When Paxton and Josh are shown a text photo of their missing friend Ollie, they completely miss the obvious sign that he is dead—not sleeping—simply because his eyes are closed. Furthermore, the male leads form baffling, instantaneous emotional attachments to girls they barely know, completely undercutting any realistic character behavior. The film’s storytelling completely lacks depth, especially regarding the brief, unexplained torture of Ollie and the Asian girl. It also pushes a highly frustrating anti-American bias, portraying American travelers with massive ignorance. The entire town, including the sheriff, plays dumb while actively working for the Elite Hunting Club. It is a deeply messed-up premise that relies on cheap shock value over sensible writing. See more Ashequl I @Tofa13 4 days ago Hostel, one of the most disturbing movies I have ever watched. The story wasn’t that great. A group of friends travels to an unfamiliar town for pleasure, but they end up in a hostel used by the rich to satisfy their darkest desires. The story was simple, but the execution was good. It had some seriously disturbing horror elements that really made you feel the terror. It could have been a much better watch if they had handled the ending differently. The ending could have worked if they hadn’t killed off some important characters. The main character’s ending wasn’t that satisfying either. Overall, an average watch.
