There’s already been a cheesy hippo movie, but this one feels like a step up in production quality. I appreciated the attempt to do something different with an animal-based horror story. Unfortunately, the screenplay feels flat, and the hippo’s CGI makes the danger hard to believe. When a film relies on an animal to drive the horror, the creature needs to feel convincing. Here, the effects look artificial, and the suspense never becomes genuinely frightening. Instead of feeling caught up in the danger, I kept thinking about how fake it looked. Ultimately, Hungry is fine for a one-time watch, but it doesn’t leave much of an impression. The concept is creative, and the production is better than similar cheesy films, yet the writing and effects hold it back. I wanted more tension and a hippo that felt truly threatening, but the movie never delivered. I wouldn’t revisit it. What started out feeling like a bad student film project somehow managed to get progressively worse with every passing minute. It was like watching a slow-motion car wreck—you knew it was going to be bad, but you just couldn’t look away. Naturally, I had to rubberneck all the way to the end. Final verdict a hippo wreck.
