Blu B Nov 12 A Classic 50's Adventure. Solidly made all around and while the special effects are simple and dated at points they still are pretty clean and and hold well. You can see the care and work that went into so much of the set design and special effects. This really doesn't rely on a lot of shootouts, explosions, or over the top Uncharted like thrills to keep your attention. But really relies on scientific plausiblity and does it quite well. It's really about exploring a world never seen before with a few Indiana Jones type thrills here and there but 80% of the time it's like being a kid in your backyard exploring and feeling a sense of seeing things for the first time. I can defintely see how Vernes's work has inspired so many Scientists and Scholars throughout the centuries with his mix of science and imagination and I have a great respect for it. Masoon is really good here and the best thing with a nothing keeps him down attitude. Th whole crew is great and while none have a super layer of depth they are all memorable especially Gertrude the Duck. Odd choice for music but it does work and is distinct. If I had to fault this is that it can drag at certain points especially say in the first half. Where it really relies on just showing you cool things and exploring but doesn't do so really in a cohesive manner. Also certain scenes just go on a bit too long and aren't as engaging to look at. You can only see rocks and caverns for so long before it just starts to blend in. But it does pick up and even though I almost lost interest at certain points it did just enough to keep me going where I was drawn by another cool sight or idea. Anyone who is a fan of Golden Era adventure style flicks, the director, any actors here, or the novel should check this out. Also Hollywood attempt to conduct a strong chick in charge movie but with a woman who is a joke. This movie should not have been made. Let us have tea, with a double ration of raisins!" A classic Jules Verne fantasy tale with all the Victorian sensibilities (and whimsical scientific standards) you could hope to find, Journey to the Center of the Earth is one of the better of the big-budget midcentury adventure films. It features not only a series of elaborate sets and James Mason in his silver fox years, but an oddly pervasive sense of humor that keeps things lighthearted even as our ragtag group of explorers are facing slow deaths in underground caverns - there's a festive duck sidekick and in the final scenes, Pat Boone has to use a lamb to prevent a series of nuns from seeing him naked, after being blown through a volcanic tube and presumed dead. The structure of this film will feel surprisingly familiar to many, with features that have seldom changed in the action-adventure films of later decades - the discovery of an artifact, the exotic locales, a love interest, a competing villain to clash with, and an ultimate conclusion that keeps the big discovery from being too earth-shattering. Shame that Harryhausen wasn't brought in for the special effects, he probably could have gotten a bit more creative than putting some paint on a few lizards. It's funny that Boone has practically disappeared from the realm of pop culture; he was literally the most successful American singer of the 1950s after Elvis, but tens of millions of records sold doesn't mean you'll live on in the minds of later generations.
