After his father's demise, Charlie Price (Joel Edgerton) inherits the family business, a shoe factory in Northampton, England. He is not interested in shoes, and the factory is in such dire financial straits that he must lay off 15 employees. However a fortuitous encounter with a transvestite cabaret singer (Chiwetel Ejiofor) inspires Charlie to save the factory from closure by producing erotic footwear, much to the chagrin of the workers.

It's a hoot watching future Oscar-nominee Ejiofor ("12 Years a Slave") spectacularly lighting up the screen as Lola. Ejiofor singing "Whatever Lola Wants" is a rousing highlight. The actor manages the character nuances magnificently.

Kinky Boots (2005) is a smart and entertaining movie. I love how it shows the relationship between the straight guy, who’s worried about what everyone thinks, and the guy in drag, who learned to be confident in who he really is and refuses to hide it. (But they both need each other.) The tension between them, and other relationships makes the story both moving and sometimes funny. Chiwetel Ejiofor and Joel Edgerton are both fantastic—they really bring their characters to life and make the story feel believable and engaging. The rest of the cast is great also.I’ve watched this well-made movie several times over the years, and it never gets old.

It is true that without CE it would be harder to find this as enjoyable as it is, but JE is also very good, so it makes for a great pairing. I love the quirks of the story, the oddball nature of some of the characters, the industrial setting, and the level of comedy is just right. It's a film I forget how much I enjoy until I'm watching it again

This was a wonderful story. I have to say that in my younger years, I was quite judgmental. Now that I am 60+, I have improved upon myself and have become more understanding and welcoming. This is a heartfelt movie that was wonderfully written. I can only imagine how difficult life was for folks like this and I was one of the ones that pointed a finger. For that, I am truly sorry. This is a movie to watch!
