Robert Downey Jr. is amazing and James Spader just has a natural gift when it comes to playing "bad guys." The film is gut wrenching but definitely keeps your attention and what it does best is that it makes you really feel for the characters involved, especially Julian, played by Robert Downey Jr. It dives deep into the cocaine lifestyle of upper class younger people and takes you on a harrowing journey into what drugs can do to a person and the people surrounding them, and in this case it shows what cocaine and the cocaine lifestyle of Beverly Hills does and how it impacts the users, friends and family, along with the people who supply it. Is it a wrist slitter film? Yes, but the message is profound and important and the acting is outstanding. Too good of a movie not to watch despite the intense drama and some very unfortunate outcomes for multiple parties involved. Moreover, the film does a great job of conveying the excess of the 1980s party lifestyle a common theme of the author. I am a big Brett Easton Ellis fan and had read the book. This movie is not even close to the darkness or storylines of the book. Downey and Spader carry their roles well. Where the film goes wrong is the casting of McCarthy and Gertz as Clay and Blair. Neither possessed the charisma or acting chops needed here.
