Set on one single day in August 1912 at the family's Connecticut seaside home, the story follows the Tyrone family as it faces the looming dual spectres of Edmund's potentially fatal consumption diagnosis alongside his mother Mary's increasingly fragile and anxious state of mind. The family knows that the situation threatens to return her to the severe morphine addiction that was only recently overcome.

In a work as emotionally devastating as this, the performances are everything. Go to Full Review

I thought that I didn't like Eugene O'Neill's play. Turned out, I had just never seen Jessica Lange perform it. Go to Full Review

Jessica Lange’s Oscar-worthy performance anchors Long Day’s Journey Into Night, but a few more liberties with the play might have made the adaptation as compelling onscreen as it is onstage. Go to Full Review

See this film even if you have seen the play, see it because it’s a very good rendition of an American theater classic, an excellent introduction to the work of Eugene O’Neill. Go to Full Review

Lange’s beguiling work is nothing short of astonishing. If the film is seen, and it should be, she must be in the awards conversation. Go to Full Review

Aaron C @AaronC72 1 day ago Saw the film during a short run in LA last month. Jessica Lange gives one of the greatest performances of her impressive career. She loves this character and her descent into addiction is incredibly moving. The other actors are also wonderful. The adaptation alone is amazing; I'm not sure how you take this gargantuan play and get it down to under two hours but David Lindsay-Abaire did it beautifully. I've read that no dialogue of O'Neill's was changed for this adaptation. It's not always each to watch this family go at each other but with acting and dialogue this strong, it's still beautiful to witness. It's also rare these days to see a film take it's time and not add a lot of over-the-top cuts or scoring (I think the fog may be one of the only external sounds). Overall, a lot of care was put into the acting, directing, and script. I hope it gets more screenings and a streamer that supports it. Maybe also another Oscar nom for Ms. Lange? She deserves it.
