Depois de um primeiro filme promissor (onde a minha grande expectativa era vê-los a explorar o labirinto e a superar vários jogos lá dentro), Provas de Fogo abandona todo esse mistério isolado para se transformar num filme de zombies genérico, chato e sem identidade. The cast is solid, but the sequel added more great characters. Giancarlo Esposito, Rosa Salazar, Jacob Lofland and Nathalie Emmanuel were great addition to the cast. Dylan O'Brien is great as Thomas, love Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Newt. The sequel gave me a little bit Last of Us vibes, wich is not weird because both are apocalypse virus driven plots. To be honest I didn't read the books, so maybe Last of Us is inspired by the books or the movie makers are inspired by the game. Leaving the Maze behind opens the door to ruined cities, barren wastelands, and new factions, giving the series a much larger scope. Wes Ball keeps the action moving with exciting chase sequences, encounters with the Cranks, and several memorable set pieces that are easy to follow without becoming chaotic. Dylan O'Brien continues to be a dependable lead, while Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Ki Hong Lee make the returning cast easy to invest in. The film also does a good job revealing more about WCKD, the Flare virus, and the larger conflict while leaving enough mystery to keep the story moving. The tradeoff is that the sequel loses some of the originality that made the first film stand out. The mystery gives way to a more familiar "run from the evil organization" story, and character development often takes a back seat to the action.
