Jonah Hill lived in was a far cry from the semi-rural blue collar towns I lived in during the mid-90s; we had completely different experiences as teens. I applaud his work here, though, and the passion in making this is evident. It was a nice touch to go so far as to shoot on a 16mm Arriflex and framing it in 90s-standard 1.33:1. And, as has been gushed over before, the soundtrack is fantastic. It doesn't limit itself to skateboarding or 90s culture; instead, it deals with something much deeper: the reality of growing up without even realizing it—especially when we aren't sure who we really are. "Sunburn" is just a kid—literally just a boy—searching for his place in the world, even if he doesn't consciously recognize that goal. He tries to fit into a group or subculture because he isn't getting what he needs for a healthy home life; much of this dynamic is explored through his older brother, who has suffered (and continues to suffer) from traumas that are virtually impossible to erase. It is as if the film were speaking directly to someone going through a life transition, showing us that, for much of our journey of self-discovery, we are not alone. The ending is what it needs to be considering the car crash, I think it was reasonable. Personally, I would have ended the film with no dialogue to try make the scene feel different. Ray and Fourth Grade are the best characters, but this film makes it clear how flawed all the characters are. Fuck Shit is okay but kind of an idiot. But there has to be a film every now and then where most of the main cast are douchebags, because like the world isn't perfect. The way the film starts doesn't really explain why the story as a whole exists, it just seems Stevie finds them cool and they like him. Stevie having sex with a girl much older than him was something I didn't expect to be so uncomfortable with since he is a boy and the girl is older, but I am glad I was made uncomfortable or I would be worried. The skating scenes are the best part. I don't know whether it portrays the 90s well, talk to a kid from then. Do not watch with children. I didn't even make it all the way through because of the BS and fabrication of how things were. Jonah Hill, you should be ashamed, you may have lived the 90’s but you did not grow up in this culture. I'd never heard of this one but what a nice surprise. Sunny Suljic was outstanding in this. There was plenty of excitement ,drama and sadness . It's definitely worth the watch.
