Critics Consensus

George A. Romero's debut set the template for the zombie film, and features tight editing, realistic gore, and a sly political undercurrent.

Night of the Living Dead is taut and uncompromising, ending on a note of bitter irony. Performances are adequate and often better, especially in the case of Jones, who clearly has what it takes to go on to bigger things. Go to Full Review

Romero was offered a budget for colour; he preferred shooting in black and white; the result is a flat murky ambience which is perfect for the ramshackle American Gothic landscape where the events occur. Go to Full Review

Clumsily shot, awkwardly acted and as for being scary, completely ineffective. Go to Full Review

Romero’s distrust of authority is reflected in the ending, with cops brandishing guns and German shepherds on taut leashes carrying out extrajudicial executions conjuring the imagery of then contemporaneous civil rights marches under siege by the police. Go to Full Review

Josh Sep 26, 2026 Watching it now, it feels more like a dark comedy. Audience were laughing in for probably 40% of the movie See more D H @RT99330466 4 days ago i do not understand the rave reviews. as a lover of the horror genre, i was excited to watch this, ready loaded with permissive forgiveness for anything that was outdated, wobbly sets, tired tropes, and questionable of-its-time characterisation. but it turned out to be just so dreadfully dull. we didn't even make it half way through. a solid 30 minutes was spent boarding up every window, with nothing else happening. every bit of dialogue between characters or from the radio seemed designed to pad out the time as much as possible, arguments repeating the same points on each side a dozen times back and forth, the radio informing us five separate times that victims were being eaten, the one bit of dialogue the leading lady got in those 40 minutes was a word for word replay of her introduction scene. the choreography was all atrocious too. it was just truly awful, devastatingly boring, without one redeeming line or shot. we are disappointed. See more Rebecca L @RebeccaL Oct 23, 2026 ⭐ 4/5. I thought Night of the Living Dead was a good horror movie for how old it is. Even though it's in black and white, it still has that creepy feeling that keeps you wondering what's going to happen next. I liked how the movie wasn't just about zombies attacking people. It also showed how people act when they're scared and how they can turn against each other when things get bad. I thought Ben was one of the best characters because he tried to keep everyone together and figure out how to survive. Some parts were a little slow, and you can tell it's an older movie, but I still enjoyed it. The ending caught me off guard too. I'd give it a 4 out of 5. It's a classic horror movie, and I can see why so many zombie movies were inspired by it. See more David S @Teradactyl719 Oct 22, 2026 The only true actual Halloween horror film. See more Vixo S @vixo_six Oct 16, 2026 Night of the Living Dead has lost some of its original shock because the zombie genre has repeated its most recognizable ideas for decades. Yet the film remains unsettling through its black-and-white atmosphere, isolated setting and believable human conflict. Fear, pride and panic make the survivors almost as dangerous to one another as the dead outside. Duane Jones gives the film a powerful center as Ben, and his final fate carries a disturbing historical weight when viewed alongside the violence directed at Black Americans in 1968. I admire the film more as a groundbreaking historical event than as my favorite zombie movie, but its social unease remains deeply effective. See more Alex B @AlexBioni Oct 13, 2026 The Original Zombie Nightmare This is a masterpiece. The story was groundbreaking for its time. Today, it might feel like an episode of The Walking Dead, but back then it was revolutionary. A group of survivors barricade themselves in a vacant house during a zombie outbreak. I like the news perspectives, too. The ending is chilling. The blood and practical effects deliver, from the decaying body to a zombie getting hit with a fire poker. The makeup looks great. The black and white cinematography makes the zombies scarier, and the firelight looks real. I'm glad they went with black and white. The acting is great, especially Duane Jones, our Rick Grimes trying to keep everyone alive. Karl Hardman plays the guy you love to hate. The middle's pacing could be better, but after everything in the first act, it's important to take a breath before things go full blown again in the third. As someone from Pittsburgh, I'm proud this timeless horror classic is part of my city's history. See more Read all reviews
