What to Know

Critics Consensus

Despite a valiant turn from Jessica Chastain as the spectral embodiment of a smothering parent, Other Mommy proves too silly for its intermittently effective jump scares to add up to a spooky whole.

Audience Says

With startling moments dampened by shallow thematic explorations, Other Mommy is only a semi-scary experience that leaves much to be desired.

Other Mommy pinballs at breakneck speed between austere supernatural thriller, Raimi-esque OTT horror-comedy and earnest family drama, never quite sticking the landing on any of them. Go to Full Review

Very cute — and Clark is an excellent shellshocked kid — but I’d have chosen more powerful thrills and bloody chaos over thematic niceties any day. Go to Full Review

Other Mommy, though a mere 93 minutes, overstays its welcome. Go to Full Review

Even without the great horror novel it’s based on, Other Mommy is plagued with a host of problems. It’s goofy in all the wrong ways, puts its only good scare in the trailer, and flubs everything else. Go to Full Review

The film had the right pieces to succeed: fun performances, good concept, an interesting approach. Unfortunately, it’s all buried under strange tonal choices that undermine any efforts to create an effective horror tale. Go to Full Review

Great set pieces and a committed Chastain performance tip this one over into "sure, why not" territory, though the plot is underbaked and often extremely nonsensical. Still, it's better than Imaginary, Boogeyman or IT: Welcome to Derry Go to Full Review

AmyRose 1 hr ago Amazing movie! See more michael j 3 hrs ago good movie special effects were good See more DayNell 14 hrs ago The trailer had me excited, but unfortunately, the movie fell flat. What started as a promising horror story quickly turned into a confusing mix of supernatural horror, comedy, and family drama. The grandmother dropped some gems, but the plot was all over the place. I couldn’t tell whether this was supposed to be a metaphor for family secrets or an actual horror movie. Not every scary movie needs a deeper meaning! Sometimes a good plot, a creepy monster, and a satisfying ending are enough. Disappointing overall. See more Abe 16 hrs ago Absolute cinema!! Made my heart race, I thought I was gonna pass out!!
