Pan attempts to reinvent the hero's origin story within a baroque, ultra-colorful universe. Although Hugh Jackman is effective in his over-the-top portrayal of the pirate Blackbeard (you wouldn't even guess it was him), the film loses its way amidst a muddled script and excessive digital effects. It is a film that is fundamentally original in form, having finally decided to move away from the source material that has been adapted for the big screen so many times before. The tedious fairy-tale world "about a boy who doesn’t want to grow up" has been consigned to oblivion, giving way to a serious story interwoven with a touch of humor. The story, though it has an uneven pace and plot simplifications, is presented with restraint, aiming to appeal to a broader audience. Sometimes this works better, other times a bit worse.
