Maria Bamford has built a career on turning radical honesty into radical comedy -- often blurring the line between performance and personal crisis. In this documentary, co-directors Judd Apatow and Neil Berkeley trace her path from a childhood in Duluth, Minnesota, through discovering a love of performance in college, to hard-won fame in Los Angeles while closely following her present day life for almost four years. Also featuring hilarious clips from her stand-up specials and testimonials from fellow comedians who admire her singular voice, the film doesn't shy away from the harder material: Bamford's mental health journey and pivotal family relationships that shaped her along the way. The result is a portrait that's as funny as it is tender, capturing an artist who has made a career of finding laughter inside the hardest truths.

Like all great comedians, she shows us that the specifics of her experience illuminate our universal fears and frustrations. Go to Full Review

A shining ode to both the big picture and its small details, arguing that a life without detours and surprises is no life at all. Go to Full Review

While the film leans on other comics to celebrate Bamford’s unique delivery, deft timing and exquisite plying of vulnerability, it’s the time with her family -- her parents and her sister -- that grounds the documentary. Go to Full Review

This is less a straight retrospective on her career, more of her emotional journey to find internal peace, love, and gratitude for her own path. Go to Full Review

One of the best from both of them, as they together and separately continue to elevate the genre with hilarious, moving, and compelling stories that are never stale in their structures. Go to Full Review

Bamford is also incredibly open with Apatow and Berkeley, willing to inspect the darkness she’s been trying to make sense of since she was a child, adding to a sensational documentary about a gifted performer. Go to Full Review

See more Matt D @Tvsmatt 3 days ago We have loved Maria Bamford and her comedy for many years. She has become far more than the greatest living comedian, but a HERO to many of us for her work in her community. Judd Apatow does an amazing job of covering her life and comedy. Thank you, Judd and Maria, for a truly beautiful documentary! A must see! :-) See more Janine T @RT26313562 6 days ago Beautifully tragically funny. One of the best documentaries I have seen in my long life. The openness of the kind ever-suffering comedic genius that is Maria Bamford was a joy to watch. Compassionate directing and great editing, this documentary is a gift to film making and a perfect tribute to an incredible woman. Suicide ideation is common amongst those of us with severe anxiety and it was refreshing to watch the subject being dealt with in a comedic way, we need more films like this to deal with the stigma surrounding those who feel everything magnified. See more Seany H @RT62515399 6 days ago I am indeed a Maria Bamford fan. I was afraid it might be a typical Hollywood "here are celebrities telling us how great she is". Fortunately it was mostly interviews with he family and friends and the celebrities interviewed were ones integral to her career. Her honesty is great. Lots (and I mean lots) of clips of her shows and standups too. See more Scott E @RT19581245 6 days ago I liked it. See more Read all reviews
