Critics Consensus

Molly Ringwald gives an outstanding performance in this sweet, intelligent teen comedy that takes an ancient premise and injects it with insight and wit.

The movie is a charming, funny update of a very old story, and Ringwald gives a fine performance, but somehow the picture never quite reaches the heights. Go to Full Review

Cinderella going to the ball is, after all, the ultimate prom story. So it's no wonder that Pretty in Pink—a silly-sweet teen update—comes off like a hip fairy tale. Go to Full Review

Another of [Hughes]' glimpses into contemporary teenage life that is certain to find a young audience eagerly waiting its arrival. They will not be disappointed. Go to Full Review

Ted Feb 15 Glad to finally see it. I probably would enjoy it more if I grew up watching it. John Hughes was working through stuff in the 80s. If I grew up watching it like Breakfast Club I don't see it. See more James K @Jamesdkman 5d Seeing this as an adult, I still don't like it. I would have thought I would, especially since I like Some Kind Of Wonderful. I guess because I saw that movie first, Pretty In Pink feels more like the ripoff, despite it being the other way around. I'm really not the biggest Ringwald fan, and perhaps that has more to do with the over saturation of her in the 80's, especially with teen films. Her performance was a standard Molly Ringwald one, which is neither bad or stellar. The Duckie character seemed to have been the most unique and flushed out one by comparsion to the others, and he was pretty insufferable to watch. He was a walking harrassment case at times; this is the guy people look back on as being adorable? The level of meaness these teens seem to have with one another in a lot of Hughes films often borders on exaggeration. It feels more like we're looking at high school from the perspective he might of had. I always get bored watching this film, so I can't reccomend it. See more Cameron H. @camthemovieman Feb 23 I’m glad to say I’ve finally seen “Pretty in Pink!” Seeing it in theaters for the first time for its 40th anniversary was so much fun! I really enjoyed this film. Great performances all around, especially from Molly Ringwald, Jon Cryer, and Andrew McCarthy. I always love a classic 80s soundtrack. Overall, “Pretty in Pink” is a fantastic 80s film that everyone needs to watch. Full of 80s nostalgia and a great Romeo & Juliet inspired story. See more Wed W. @WEDWAY Feb 17 Still an amazing movie forty years later. See more Mark C. @mrpiggy1992 Feb 17 Molly Ringwald, Jon Cryer, and Andrew McCarthy give excellent performances and James Spader gives a hilarious performance as the girl obsessed Ste See more Erica K. @dotsandpopcorn Feb 4 Its a classic that demands a revisit every couple of years. Absolutely wonderful performances by all. This started my love of 80s rom coms. Its for the ones who are a bit different and dont fit into the cookie cutter world. See more Read all reviews
