Imaginatively evoking the inner landscape of human beings longing to connect, to love and feel loved, the film is a parable of happiness gloriously found and tragically lost. "Requiem for a Dream" tells parallel stories that are linked by the relationship between the lonely, widowed Sara Goldfarb and her sweet but aimless son, Harry. The plump Sara, galvanized by the prospect of appearing on a TV game show, has started on a dangerous diet regimen to beautify herself for a national audience.

Though the movie may be too intense for some to stomach, the wonderful performances and the bleak imagery are hard to forget.

Clearly influenced by the cut-and-paste of hip-hop, Requiem stokes and builds its tragic momentum like an expertly mixed dance cut, the kind that catches you so seductively in its rhythms you'll follow it anywhere... Go to Full Review

The fidgety style that can energize a fairly lively debut cheapie doesn't work very well with a cast of familiar faces. It detracts from a movie whose historically capable and seemingly well-cast actors might have carried the show by themselves... Go to Full Review

Craftwork is aces across the board, with a sound mix that’s particularly dense. Go to Full Review

Ghostly dissolves capture them turning into mere echoes of themselves. Aronofsky speeds up time and draws it out agonisingly, evoking the rush of the high and then its crushing absence. Go to Full Review

It may be too much for some viewers to take, but no one ever said addiction is pretty. And Aronofsky earns every right to his excesses by making sure audiences feel the loss of humanity instead of treating them like spectators at a freak show. Go to Full Review

Jason Y. @yargbull 4d Over-hyped and somewhat boring; the characters were not all that interesting, and I never felt it was as “intense and disturbing” as it has always been advertised, appearing on quite a few “most disturbing movies ever”-lists. Not terrible, just not sure I’d recommend it unless you’re a little bored and just need something different to watch (or like captive on an airplane, where I saw it). See more Kevin P 4d Easily one of the most visually mesmerizing and heartbreakingly disturbing movies I've ever seen. It's a brutal movie about drug addiction. Yet the hypnotic cinematography and unorthodox editing of onscreen bodily sensations are very ethereal and suck you into its world. It's fun in the first half and slowly spirals into chaos and despair in the second half. Disturbing, yet fascinating. All thanks to the fantastic direction from Darren Aronofsky. The soundtrack is captivating, especially the titular music track Requiem for a Dream/Lux Aeterna. The cast is fantastic. The standout performance is from Ellen Burstyn, who acts her heart out into such a believable and heartbreaking character. The movie has great editing and stylized cinematography. You just want everyone to be happy, despite knowing the inevitability. The final half hour is incredibly tense and disorienting. It's an incredibly powerful cautionary tale about drug addiction AND how we as a society treat drug addicts. See more Ibraheem Aleem K @iby124 4d amazing best thing ever the fridge was very scary See more Boo E. @Boo.Eastland 6d I have watched this film 12 times. It is the best portrayal of the internal chaos of substance addiction and mental health I have seen to date. It's a psychoanalytic psychedelic dive into the many dangers of consumption, loss of meaning, and inhumanity that befalls people who lose themselves to substances. It's an art house film - so know now that it's not "realism". See more power E @torturecide Feb
