Critics Consensus

As with the first film, Scream 2 is a gleeful takedown of scary movie conventions that manages to poke fun at terrible horror sequels without falling victim to the same fate.

A howling great time. Go to Full Review

It's nothing like as inventive as the first Nightmare on Elm Street, but it's much more thoughtful and provocative than most genre horror movies, and more fun. Go to Full Review

Good in the first half, begins to fade when new ideas are all used up and then finally staggers exhausted to the finish line. Go to Full Review

Scream 2 successfully takes the rules of a sequel - higher body count, bigger set-pieces - and delivers a film that intensifies everything from the self-aware humour and the death scenes to the emotional connections between its cast of characters. Go to Full Review

Feels less like the sequel that fans deserved and instead like one rushed into production to strike while the slasher iron was hot. Still, it's not without its charm and scares. Go to Full Review

This sequel properly continues the story of the original, lays even more crucial groundwork for its own sequels to play with, and establishes that the Scream formula can be replicated with the right amount of twists and turns. Go to Full Review

Dennis E @coda.coza 1d One of the best Scream movies despite the loss of a beloved character. I wish we would've seen one of the killers in the first movies (at least in an image or from the side), so that the killer would've been better integrated into this movie. See more Sabastian O. @sozo0920 1d One of the better sequels! See more Dominic S @Domdabom 2d Not my favorite entry in the franchise, it definitely has the same self awareness that was introduced in the original. The stakes getting raised with a particular death of a legacy character, as well the commentary on horror sequels still keep it at the level of the original, the other kills, as well as the killer receal in the 3rd act aren't bad by any means, but they didn't have the same shock value as the two that came before it, however that is more than made up for by Laurie Metcalfs bug eyed and psychotic performance, for which she deserves much more praise and credit. The motives, while not complex or detailed, were somehow still realistic and believable. Scream 2s biggest attribute was that it didn't try to outdo its predecessor, it just added to it. Its biggest downfalls were that the killers had maybe 5 minutes of screen time outside of being ghostface and the first attack on Sydney was too brief. Scream 2 did give the first unmasking killer reveal, which is iconic. 4/5. See more Aaz F @Aaz101 2d Scream 2 is a great sequel to the original. It has consistency fresh off the first film. It builds very good on the main three characters. Great chase and suspense sequences which are highlights of the film. See more Hunter H. @ThatMovieGuy04 2d I love this movie this is my #1 fav scream movie See more Mike N @MYC_mike 2d Shocked on the audience score, I think it was the harder of the movies to guess the Ghostfaces.
