nick S @Nick_S 2 days ago The lighting drove me nuts. The cinematographer went to town with ND filters and lightbulbs only glowed a meter. Also some faces were lit by nonexistent practicals. Ethan did a fairly good job but other actors came up a bit short. Story wise it was a bit cheesy and nonsensical to me. Trying to go for "The Shining" spooky vibe but not at that skill level. It was night time 90% of the movie. There was little dialogue, no buildup or background. The ending was rushed disappointing…just plain stupid. The jump scares were the worst. While it isn’t my scariest movie, I can understand why it’s rated so highly. It delivers on claustrophobia, dread, and real-life stomach turning darkness. Also, the twist at the end is well done. The found-footage element of Sinister meshes seamlessly with the rest of the film, adding a unique layer of horror to an already eerie atmosphere. Every time the projector began to roll, my muscles tightened, my heart quickened, and I found myself yelling at the screen for Ellison to confront these dangers alone. The story asks relatively little of the audience in terms of suspending disbelief and, because of its simplicity, leaves few gaps in the tale of Mr. Boogie. Simplifying the backstory allows the viewer to marinate in the terror rather than getting lost in mythology. The scares feel earned and are rarely cheapened by overused quick cuts or empty jump scares. Sinister is a very successful horror film with plenty of well-executed mechanics for future filmmakers to borrow from. The home videos are disturbing mainly because of the soundtrack behind them, and the atmosphere becomes genuinely terrifying without relying on constant jump scares. I also loved how the family dynamic feels believable and grounded instead of being forced into unnecessary conflict, which makes the tragedy hit much harder. Ethan Hawke and Juliet Rylance are excellent, and the final act feels tragic but completely earned. A deeply effective horror film with outstanding atmosphere and sound design.
