Critics Consensus

Sleepless in Seattle is a cute classic with a very light touch and real chemistry between the two leads -- even when spending an entire movie apart.

Sleepless In Seattle balances romance and realism by giving its central characters two different but equally pragmatic philosophies on love. Go to Full Review

"Sleepless in Seattle" (citywide), a real charmer, is a romantic comedy about an ultimate long-distance relationship. Emphasize "romantic." Emphasize "comedy." It delivers both. Go to Full Review

Self-consciousness infects Nora Ephron's sweet but perilously thin love story, Sleepless in Seattle...such are the perils of these postmodernist times: even our love stories feed off borrowed emotion. Go to Full Review

Sleepless in Seattle is odd because there is no meet cute until the final scene. Somehow, Norah Ephron has created a world where it makes sense that two strangers are separated by 3,000 miles and still manage to fall in love. Go to Full Review

Sleepless in Seattle succeeds as a glorious three-way romantic comedy between men, women and children. It's a valiant valentine to the post-nuclear family. Go to Full Review

Erica Feb 12, 2026 Love this movie! We were so excited this was showing for Valentine’s Day. It made a great date night out! See more Patrick M Feb 15, 2024 Great classic Rom Com, a few things didn't hold up over time, but overall enjoyable film. See more TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch Oct 18, 2026 Sleepless in Seattle is a classic that continues to resonate with audiences. Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks have incredible chemistry, bringing warmth and charm to a love story that captures what romance should feel like. The film understands how to build an emotional connection between two people, even when their paths have yet to fully come together. What makes this movie special is how well it has stood the test of time. The storytelling, performances, and overall cinematic approach create something memorable that never feels forgotten. It is the kind of film that reminds you why romantic comedies can leave such a lasting impression. Sleepless in Seattle is not something I watch constantly, but it is a movie I find myself revisiting every so often. Each time, I appreciate the story and the filmmaking that helped make it such an enduring classic. It is one of those films that stays with you long after the credits roll, and I would absolutely recommend it. See more Huntin P @PaxVobiscum80 Oct 17, 2026 You have taken up an idea and run wild with it. So said Jane Austen's Emma. Unfortunately, Annie (Meg Ryan) has no Austen friend to give her wise counsel. Instead she has that most troublesome of female friends, an enabler (Rosie O'Donnell). Annie gets lost in romantic fantasies after hearing a man's voice on the radio. The man is Tom Hanks's character, a widower relocated to Seattle, the other side of the country, whose son thinks he is lonely and in need of a new wife. Annie writes to him, doesn't send her letter, but then her friend sends it anyway, and well, maybe there's something written in the stars. Bill Pullman plays the remarkably understanding and patient fiancee of Annie, and Hanks's own wife plays his sister in this movie. The little boy is very likeable, unlike, say, the insufferable brat in One Fine Day. Charming romantic comedy. Has an old world feel to it. See more Brian D @Brianwd2 Oct 4, 2026 72%. 10/1/26. Pretty slow for me. The premise is cute - Annie becomes obsessed with a widower she hears on the radio - but it's a stretch that someone as attractive as her would resort to anything like this. And even setting aside the far-fetched setup, it just didn't do much for me overall. Jonah is the best part of the movie - his determination to find his dad a new partner is endearing and gives the film most of its energy. I love how he gets fixated on Annie. The long buildup does pay off when they finally meet at the top of the Empire State Building, and the Seattle house is a great backdrop. Glad I finally checked it off the list, but no need to revisit. 1.5/5 rewatch See more Jaz S @Jasminabc12 Sep 22, 2026 Finally watched it because of all the hype. The leading lady had an emotional affair the entire movie, and the love interests got together in the last 5 minutes in a quick wrap up. I couldn’t understand the chemistry since the storytelling didn’t make much sense See more Read all reviews
